Most likely if you are not marking fish they aren't there in the cone of your signal. Maybe they were spooked by the boat. I believe your 587 is close to my 798, in which case, make sure the default didn't set your transducer at 200khz, if it did, change it to 200/83 khz. The 200 khz gives better definition but at 20 feet your probably only looking at a 3 ft circle on the bottom. 83 has a 60 degree cone angle and it covers a circle as wide as you are deep. So at 20 ft your should see a 20ft circle of the bottom.

Also the shallower you see fish, the less chance they are in the cone unless they are right under the transducer.

Keep in mind, that if you are fishing slope type structure, that the reading that the unit shows you,(in both frequencies) is the shallower edge of the cone.. any fish that is below the shallower edge of the cone, wont be shown on the graph, it will be below the bottom reading. Its not that the sonar doesnt see or print those hidden fish, its that they are buried in the bottom reading. Seeing wider, only pertains to a flat bottom.. Not a big deal when looking for towers of perch or crappies, but a bottom hugging walleye is able to hide in the "dead zone".

Its not a Humminbird thing, its a sonar thing.

The default setting will easily see suspended fish, even a 1/8 ounce jig. On my next trip I will be experimenting with increased sensitivity. Some people increase sensitivity until they get a double echo.

If you have down imaging you can see fish in the dead zone.
