Default Garden hose faucet problem?

On my outside garden hose faucet the little plastic relief valve thing, or what ever it is, on top of the faucet broke off and all the water pressure is leaking out the top when I turn on the faucet. I found the plastic cap part laying on the ground next to it and some type of like needle valve that goes under the cap. Is this part replaceable or do need need to change out the complete faucet?

REW is right, that is a vacuum breaker or anti siphon device, usually happens when some one leaves the hose connected during the winter, happens a lot on frost free faucets..

What does REW mean? Can I replace just the cap, or need I replace the whole spigot? Is this something I can easily do myself, or best I call a plumber?

I replaced the whole faucet, it was about $20 I got the thread on adaptor that went to 1/2" PVC. It took me about 1 hour. If you have to go to copper it will take longer. There are a ton of youtube videos that show you how, if you have never done it. If your not comfortable call a plumber or a friend who has done it. It is really not that hard.

There are repair kits for the vacuum breaker - need to know the brand, Home Depot stocks a couple.

If you replace the whole thing, get a frost free one with a metal breaker.

Default Facet

Depending on the brand they make repair kits for them. A lot of the newer facets have a 12 inch throat that has tone soldered on. I just had the very same thing happen to me. Going to get a repair kit on Monday and try to fix it my self.

Eric:

As a long-term Michigan resident, I have learned to disconnect a garden hose every time I'm done using it, except during the months of June, July and August. Quick-connect fittings are your friend!
