I spent opening weekend of the 2012 Minnesota walleye season fishing Ottertail Lake. The bite was very good. In fact, this was one of the best openers in recent years, both for numbers of fish and fish size as well. My fishing partners and I targeted the edges of shoreline flats in 10-17 foot of water using shiners fished on either Fire-Ball Jigs or Roach Rigs. Water temperatures were in the 54- to 57-degree range. We found three sizes of fish, 12-13-inchers, 16-inch fish, and 18 ½- to 20 inchers. A stop at Ken’s Tackle on the west end of the lake revealed that most fishing parities on the lake were reporting similar results. Jigs and shiner minnows were reported to be producing the most fish.
