I have a new Yamaha 60 hp tiller. It has a lot of torque in the steering. I want to adjust the torque tab, but I want to be sure that I go the right direction. While driving the motor torques away from me. If I am sitting side ways with my left hand on the throttle it want to constantly pull away from me. If you were standing behind the boat it pulls to the left. Help please.

The tab only really adjusts one way, you will see once you loosen the bolt to adjust it. Rotate it clockwise looking at it from the bottom to lessen the torque on the tiller handle, bring a socket and ratchet with you in the boat...you can do the adjustment on the water with the motor trimmed up...might want to tether the ratchet to your wrist while you do it.
Lots of ratchets at the bottom! |

Bassin,
Simple. Loosen the nut and turn the tab all of the way in one direction. Test the boat. Loosen the nut and turn the tab all of the way in the other direction. Test the boat. Now turn the tab in the direction to minimize the torque. By your testing of the steering tab yourself, you will know exactly which direction you need to turn it - using your definitions of right and left to correct the torque. Note that the steering torque and the steering tab will be both speed dependent and trim dependent. So, most folks find the cruising speed that they like to run the boat. Then, most folks find the motor trim setting that they like to run the boat. Then, they adjust the trim tab at this cruising speed, and motor trim condition to minimize wheel torque. Then, they live with the wheel torque that they get at other boat speeds as well as motor trim positions. Remember, even if you have the motor torque completely trimmed out with the torque tab at your ideal cruise and trim settings; you will likely get very severe steering torque under starting conditions of full power, and full trimmed in motor conditions. So, be ready to control the steering wheel under these conditions, because if you do not; you will likely spin and flip the boat when the wheel gets jerked out of your hands. Good luck REW Last edited by REW; 06-05-2012 at 08:54 AM. |

Ranger and my dealer said to set trim tab in direction of the torque. So standing behind the boat it should be moved to the right. Wish I knew what was really correct! Tab in the same direction as the pull (when looking at the tab from behind) or opposite the pull?? |

I have a 75 Merc tiller on my pro guide and my tab is basically dead center. Sure I have a bit of tourque when I first take off but once out of the hole I start trimming it and at WOT (35 mph) I can actually let go of the tiller handle and it will go nice and staright, no torque at all. If I trim it too much, it tourques the opposite way so I know where my sweet spot is
