walter payton died waiting for a liver, and he certainly had enough money. you have to be on a waiting list and then it's based on who is the most critical....pepe

Something to keep in mind when you sign that organ donor card...

Cardiac death IS NOT the standard to determine if a subject is deceased. It is brain death that is the determining factor. The heart can beat long after the brain is dead. I see no issue with this.

well, at least if they "harvest" your organs you will most certainly be dead.
No scratch marks inside the coffin from being buried alive.
Could be BS, but on the show 1000 ways to die, they talked about someone that was still aware of what was going on, as they "harvested" his organs.
I'm not against it, but to each his own.

Default Disappointing

Being a big fan of WC it's really disappointing to see the uninformed exacerbating the already problematic world of organ donation....

I don't even know where to begin but would like to suggest that you spend some time educating yourself before spewing information that isn't even close to true....

Organ donation is tightly regulated and it's far from a system that caters to the wealthy, much like many of the US systems....

As far as paying for Medicare/Medicaid citizens? This great country was founded on the premise that we take care of the less fortunate because someday that could be YOU. I won't argue with the fact that the ever growing percent of peeps on the welfare teet seems to be out of control but that's for another website that allows that hot topic....

If you are ever on the end of needing an organ in order to enjoy a few more years before taking the long dirt nap, you might be grateful there are many hard working, intelligent citizens working diligently to provide access to more organs so life can go on for more peeps....

Lastly you might want to do some research on the cost of renal dialysis versus kidney transplantation. You will be pleasantly surprised to see the cost savings a transplant provides....

To all the brave organ donors, I salute you!

There are two criteria for organ donation: Donation after brain death, and Donation after cardiac death. The difference between the two has to do with when the surgeon can harvest the organs. On a patient after Brain death, they have been declared "dead", while they still have a pulse. There are a number of tests that are performed to demonstrate that this patient has suffered such a massive neurological injury, that they no longer have control over many body regulations, such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse. They also do not respond to any stimulus. Cardiac death, as described in the article, is when patients due to some circumstance do not meet the criteria of brain death. Unfortunately, I have seen situations where the time period of viability for organs has passed and the patient dies with their organs, instead of donating them. One thing to remember is the term "dead" is subjective. While a person may still have a heart beat, people need to remember without the ventilator and most likely multiple medications to keep their blood pressure up, these people loose their pulse very quickly and are termed "dead." I just agree that in these situations, death is imminent, there are no medical interventions that will keep these people alive. Why not give somebody the gift of life? Just my opinion.
Don't be so quick to jump to that, my father was declared brain dead and he became concience for a brief moment after...long enough to give mom a hug and slip back to the abyss.

I wish more states would adopt the program that instead of signing your drivers license to agree to be a donor, you would have check a box if you want to opt out. So many just don't want to address it at the time when they get their license. Recently I was sitting waiting my turn and I heard 3 young people get asked,. they were all very young men. All three hesitated but looked like they were going to agree but the girls that were with them (not sure if this is very common but that was the luck of the draw on that day) told them not to..

I think they just didn't want to think about it with them.

This week we had 3 motor cycle accident near here. I was told by someone from the hospital that they were all severe head traumas.
