Default planer board advice for a newbie

Just bought my first planer boards. I bought off shore 12's and they have the orange clips. I fish with 15/4 power braid on my trolling rigs. What exactly is the best method for attaching the board to the line? Do I wrap it around one of the clips along with clipping it to ensure the line won't slip and the board doesn't come off or is just clipping it sufficient?

I prefer mono on my trolling reels. 10 lb Berkley XT. I like a bit of stretch in a trolling line and the mono works better with the planer board releases.

Almost everyone upgrades the front clip to the black 'snapper' release, OR18.

That seems to be what I'm reading tonight. I'll do that. One question I have being I've never fished with boards is do both clips stay on the line the entire time once a fish is hooked or does one release.

Also how do you manage your lines if you get a fish on an outside board? Does everything inside of it need to be reeled up or can I guy just let out more line on the inside boards causing them to fall back and out of the way?

Last one. If I'm slow trolling a crawler harness with it will I need to physically set the hook on fish or will the board still have enough oomph to drive the hooks home on it's own even at slow speeds? If a hook set it required what is the process with a board on?

I fish with 20lb braid and notice that it will sometimes slip. I also have front & back the OR-16? releases (the ones with the post in the center) but i still wrap the back clip so it wont pull the slack threw, which would make the flag not come down. With offshore boards both clips will stay on the line. If i get a fish on my outside board i usually reel the inside one in up til the board then move it to the otherside of the boat so its out of the way (as long as im not running down riggers, if i am i reel the inside board completely in)

FYI: if your going to wrap the back clip make sure your wrap doesnt fall in the gap behind the head of the release. As long as the wrap is ON the head of the release and not behind it, when you open the release the wrap will come right out.

Goodluck!

Use very sharp hooks and the fish will hook themselves, at least, ours do. You can't get an effective hookset by pulling on a line with a 45 degree bend in it at the planer board.

Another newbie question here but after studying how these boards work wouldn't it be possible to put the snapper clip on the back of the board so that once a fish hit you could get the line to break free from the front clip so that you are not fighting the board and the fish?

I have a couple or 18s I'll give if you want to pick them up. I never really liked them, most people do though. I put church clips on the front and back of all my boards, that with perchjerkers flag spring and it's the perfect setup.
