I run a tournament on the Canadian side on the St Marys River in July using both Canadian and US waters. We are using both waters for this event with the cooperation of Canada Customs. I hear many times from US anglers who want to fish a Canadian tournament who can't due to a DUI infraction. I sat down with Canada Border Services Agency recently and i did find out that in some cases US anglers will be granted special status in Canada to fish tournaments. If your DUI is more than 10 yrs old you are considered rehabilitated and may come to Canada without any worries. If your DUI charge is less then 10 years old then you may apply(no cost) for permission to enter canada to fish a tournament. If you have more then 1 DUI infraction then you may be refused special status but it may still be possible, you need to ask. Anyone looking to fish the St Marys River or accessing Canada through the Sault Ste Marie crossing can call 705-941-3115 to inquire about your status for coming to Canada. It doesn't take long and it is very informative. They may do a background check or may not. They issue the special status permit at the border here in Sault Ste Marie and it is good for a certain time period. It doesn't take long. Check it out if you are interested
