How much oil use is normal for a 2004 HPDI? I have a 2004 619 ranger. Before a recent trip to Leech lake I added a full jug of Yamaha 2 stroke oil to my oil tank which was probably 1/8 - 1/4 full. I started pre fishing for a tourney on Wednesday and probably put 50'ish miles a day on the boat. I was SHOCKED when Saturday after the first weigh in my oil alarm went off. Checked the oil tank and sure enough I was darn near empty. I had to use my kicker to pull into a resort in town and run to Reeds.
I have also noticed that this year sometimes when I go to start the motor when leaving a spot it will smoke a lot for a minute or so. It seems to me like it might be dumping way too much oil into the motor. I know these 2 strokes can have some issues so I'm wondering if the 200 HPDI has any issues. The motor I had before this was a 150 opti and that thing sipped the oil. I could add a jug of opti oil and it would honestly last all year. |

Just ball-parking a few numbers...50 miles a day, 4 days, = 200 miles
maybe(?) 4 miles/gallon(?) = 50 gallons of fuel at 50/1 gas oil ratio = 1 gallon of oil no? |

That sounds about right, maybe a bit high but how much gas did you burn. I average 3.3-4mpg according to the lowrance hooked to my hpdi. I add a jug of oil about every other tank (the oil res. holds 2-3 gal i think)
you can adjust the oil pump on the motor, but that is an expensive powerhead if you go too lean... |

The nominal value would likely be about 100:1.
So, for every 100 gallons of fuel, you should be adding at least one gallon of oil. Are you adding more than that? If you add a gallon of oil at 50 gallons of oil, your motor might still be setup for break in. The 50:1 is the typical break in oil setting. Double check with your dealer to be sure. Just monitor the amount of fuel you use, and the amount of oil that you consume so that you have a good ratio number to give to the dealer. REW |

Any idea how long the break in period is? When I bought the boat the motor amazingly only had 76 hours on it.

The break in time is 10 hours.
I would suggest you check with your dealer to see if there is any issue with the motor and or the oil settings. REW |

REW are you positive regarding the 100:1 ratio?
I had this exact same conversation with my dealer and he was indicating the hpdi would be in the 50ish:1 range (the actual is variable depending on rpm) I also have a hpdi 250 and was thinking it was using a bit much; but its about 1 gallon of oil per 50 gallons of gas so i'm right in the 50:1 ballpark. But i'm way over 1/2 gallon of oil to 50 gallons of gas. |

Steiny,
No, I am not at all positive on the optimum mix for your engine. I am just going from older 2 stroke motors which first used 25:1, then 50:1, and then 100:1. Your motor may certainly be using 50:1 or something else. You have a very expensive motor on the back of your boat. The one thing that you really don't want to do is to burn it up because it isn't being fed enough oil. Have the dealer check to be sure that the motor is set up correctly for the hours on the motor. I have a new-to-me hpdi 150 and a oil usage number I'm seeing as I wander around the web (for 150's & 200's) is an average of 60:1...naturally rpm matters.

2004 620 w/a 225 HPDI under 4500 RPM's I get 50:1 Start going to that 5500 mark and it's closer to 35-40:1
