I was curious if you can get a portable gps that works in your car and can be put on the boat. If so what would you recommend, I would like garmin I think.

Try the GlobalSAT BU-353. At $35 it is a great GPS receiver.

I have a Delorme PN 40 hand held, and it works fine sitting on the dash of my car. Sometimes I even can get a reading inside my house if near windows.
