How prevent loss of Snap Weights

I am looking for suggestions on how to rig snap weights/planer boards when using in line planer boards.

I have both Church and Off Shore boards and Off Shore snap weight kit.

I prefer using the Off Shore boards rather than the Church. I fish Lake Ontario and the larger Finger Lakes. The Off Shore boards tend to run better in rough seas, especially when draging 2 or 3 ounce weights and large crank baits.

If I rig the boards to release on the front and let them slide down to the snap weight will the standard snap that comes with the kit hold in place until I can reel in the board?

I lost a weight that was snapped on using one of the snaps that came with the Off Shore boards. A fish hit, the front board snap released, the board slid down the line and wiped out the snap weight on it's way to my bead stop just in front of my swivel snap, which is about 5 feet from my lure.

I am looking for ideas on how to prevent this in the future.

Bum...i don't think that you want your boards to come off and slide down. Most of us use the Off Shore OR 18 release as it can really tighten down ( i use braid and never had one come off) also use the heavy release at the back end and you should be good.

I don't rig my boards to release either.

instead of using the snaps on the weights just use rubberbands. Ive never lost a weight although i dont use them with little boards. I use them for big boards so i do have a board sliding down to the weight but the rubberbands are so much better than the snaps. IMO

Add a swivel - large enough to not impede the line from running straight off the back clip of board, too use on on the snap on weights - swivel simply slides weight/board on line until stopped by connection closest to fish.

Fix the board problem first. Upgrade to the OR-18 as suggested. As for the snap weight, I don't know which one comes in the kit, but I use the red clips with the pin in the center. I run up to 8oz snap weights and have never lost one yet.

Do not rig the board to release if you are using snap weights. The snap weight would be in between the board and the bead stop, allowing the board to hit the snap weight. Not a good idea as you found out.

The snap weight kits come with the OR-16 (red release with the pin in the center). Always make sure your line is placed BEHIND the pin, so it cannot come off the line. That's what the pin is designed to do.

Use your boards in a fixed way when using snap weights. An OR-18 on the front and an OR-16 on the back will do the job with any line you use.

You can rig your board to release using inline weights and a stop bead by rigging your front release with the OR-14 (black one that comes on the boards originally) and a snap swivel or pigtail on the back end.
