Default Ranger 1860

Just found this site a few days ago. Since then, I have spent too much time reading through old posts. Lot's of good info.

I have the new boat itch... Never good. I think the Ranger 1860 would be a good fit for what I am looking for. Used ones in my area (Michigan) seem non existent. New ones seem outragous in price.

Right now just gathering info. Buying Used: Is there a certain year class that is better than another? Are there any motor combinations to stay away from?

Any other advice when looking for a specific used boat?
Pretty vauge questions but thanks for any pointers.

To new to have a bad year. I have one with yamaha's, 150,9.9, 2009. Love it. Water will come over the front, plow if waves on Erie are right, dry inspite. Four stroke is the only way to go because it opens up a ton of storage. Primarily fish Erie but salmon fished on Ontario as well. People have posted how to set one up on this site. Look for one set up right, they do show up if your not in a hurry. Your not going to save much over new.

I love the four stroke is the only way to go BS. If you want, you can have the oil resovoir mounted below with a remote fill and there is no difference between the two. Nothing wrong with any of the motors these days. I went with the Etec because it has more low end punch and we wanted to do watersports with the kids. Also, I hardly have to do a thing for maintenance. Change the lower unit oil in the fall, it winterizes itself, no oil changes, etc........

Now, back to the actual boat.........

I got one in 2007 and love it. I don't think the hull has changed since it came out. I've got a 175Opti but this hull will do well with any 150-175. I would warn you to not buy a used boat that is underpowered but I would be shocked if you found an 1860 with anything smaller than a 150.

There are 1860s with single consoles, double bubbles, and full windshields - and many combinations of various trolling motors and electronics - and every brand of engine since Ranger will hang whatever brand you want on it. Decide what you want in these departments and then just keep looking..

If you end up with one, I think you'll like the boat a lot.

I have a new(22 hours) 1860 with a 175 Verado. I really can't say anything bad about this boat other then maybe more storage would be nice. I've been in some pretty nasty conditions this spring on Mille Lacs and this hull has performed great for an 18'6" boat. The raised platform rod locker is a very nice feature on this model. I really don't have any opinion on the motor, but I sure like the Verado so far.

what are you running for a prop on your setup & what kind of #'s are you getting for RPM & top-end? i'm running the same year & motor & love it. have had for 4 years now and am finally starting to play around w/ propping. have run a tempest 19, but that was a little too much (could only get 5250 rpm w/ a full load including kicker) & ran around 46mph on gps.

Was this the prop your boat came with? Sounds like you should try a 17P just to see? I ran several props on mine. Ended up with a 19P Viper and had propman drop it to an 18P and drill the merc vent holes. Works really well. Very light by myself i have ticked 48.5 GPS. Most of the time with a regular load and a couple of us in the boat we can do 46-47. That is usual for most of the 150's on this setup. Propman may be able to set you up with something better though? I wanted an all around prop that would still have good low end for watersports too.
