I use a one gallon paint can , 4-5 inches of water, a stick as a ramp, cover the top of the water with suflowerr seeds. Suicide bucket. Problem solved.
The tin cans with peanut butter on a coat hanger sounds cheaper than sunflower seeds. I'm gonna "fine tune my presentation" and move to that method. Love Walleye Central and the stuff you learn here.

Round two. He won this one, but the war is not over. I put a piece of sponge with peanut butter on it. This morning, the ENTIRE mouse trap is gone. Next, a rat trap.

I keep 3 rat traps handy....Small yard, lots of asiatic and oriental lillies. Chippies chew down lillies - true lillies (lillium) not daylillies - without eating them, and I collect lillies... I killed a few earlier this summer, then stopped trapping when the damage stopped. Now I'm seeing chippies and damage again.

It's time to reset the traps.

My guess is, it is a chipmunk. The neighborhood is loaded with them. And, when they stay outside, no problem. But, when they take up residence in my garage, they crossed the line.

My buddy's been trapping ground squirrels around his place with rat traps baited with peanut butter. I'd guess they or chippies are your problem. Hopefully d-day is soon!

Reminds me of when I was trying to outsmart a racoon that kept getting into the cat food.
It took awhile but I finally figured out how to secure the container so it couldn't turn the top off.
couldn't believe that a critter could figure out how to turn a threaded top off of a garbage can to get at food.
