I've never tried to remove one before this Spring, but here was my experience. A friend gave me an old, but structurally sound trailer that I rebuilt. Pulled the hubs planning to replace bearings and seals and thought I may as well do the races, too. When I went to Fleet Farm to buy the parts I discovered they sell a new hub, races installed, with the seal and bearings included for only about $10 more per side than I'd pay to get all the individual parts. I got the two new hub kits. After installing them I tried to knock a race out of one of the old hubs, and gave it some mighty good blows. It never moved .001 of an inch.
Might want to check the cost of new hub kits in the size you need.

There should be two small notches for a punch to fit in. You need to work back and forth to drive them out even. Wiredog

Some hubs don't have recesses to punch the old races out, here's a couple old machinist tricks that works like a charm.
You can throw them in an oven inverted (350-400F) and they will usually fall out or if they are really stubborn you can weld a bead on the race face with an SMAW welder (stick) and they are will fall right out once they cool down, the weld bead shrinks once cooled which also shrinks the race. I've used the weld bead trick on many large industrial bearings and it's the fastest and easiest way to remove any race from a bearing seat, just be aware it needs to have a stick (SMAW) weld or it won't work...MIG or TIG just doesn't shrink enough to work effectively. Any weld stick will work but a penetrating rod like a 6013 seems to work the best...7014 not so good...7018 almost as good as 6013. |

As long as your a really good welder and don`t weld it into the hub!!

I use a mig welder. Just make sure you weld the race only and not the hub. Just a small bubble of weld in couple of places. Put a punch on one of the little bubbles of weld and give it a hit when cool. I haven't had one not come out yet.

From the back side, take a die grinder and make two small indents just behind the race 180 degrees apart then use punch to remove. Done it many times. Dave
