Devils Lake Report 6/19 -6/23
I headed up to Devils Lake last week to fish the Chamber tournament out of Graham's Island. Fishing I would say was pretty good. We ended up in 10th place over the two day tournament in a field of I believe 102, two man teams. We didn't really fish for eaters but still picked up a few when going for larger fish. We spent the entire week in 7 feet or less pitching PK Extreme Swimbaits and Berkley Flickershads in Black Gold and Gold Sunset in various sizes. The thicker the weeds the better the fishing which made for a lot of work as just about every cast had you pulling in weeds if you didn't get a hit. During prefishing we were on a lot better schools of fish pulling consistent 22"-24" fish that were pretty fat for main lake fish. We targeted the far back bays and approached these fish like bass, pitching our baits right into the cattails and getting most of our hits right on the edge of them. During the tournament we found smaller fish in our spots with the largest only pushing 22 inches and there were a TON of 16"-18" fish that had not been in the area before. The water temps rose a decent amount which may have pushed the larger fish out? Either way it was a pretty good trip. I prefished all week with my little brother and fished the tournament with my dad who was unable to make it until later in the week.
By the way, if you want eaters I would suggest pulling spinners tipped with plastics across the middle of back bays in 9-13 FOW or slip bobbering the edges of cattails.
