The new boat may have a 175 V-Rod sportin' a 21 pitch prop on the back. In a perfect world, a 9.9 kicker would be mounted next to it. However, the kicker may have to wait. So.... How slow can the 175 Verado go for pulling cranks? Will I get down to 2mph or possibly less?
And what about the 200? Same questions.

Moose,
Take off the 21 pitch prop and put an 8 pitch prop on it. Watch the tach so that you don' t over rev the motor. Also be careful on takeoff, because your hole shot will be so strong that your boat will want to go vertical. You will have a top speed of about 24 mph, and a trolling speed of about .6 mph. For those folks who don't have to make a long run to the fishing grounds, putting a lower pitch prop on their big motor when wanting to troll cranks works very well. After you have done it a couple of times, you should be able to swap props in under two minutes. REW |

About 2.5 (+/-) is my best guess.
That's what I can do with my 200 Verado on a 20' boat. (Smartcraft guages) But -- you can tilt the motor up partially, to get a little slower. REW ... LOL

Prior to usinga kicker, I used my main motor. Use either buckets out the stern or two small drift socks from your front cleats. You will be well under 2 with either motor. My 250 verado idle speed is between 3-4.

I would use 2 small trolling bags rigged midships. Not only will they slow you down but they will also help keep the boat trolling straight in rough conditions.

I get mine down to 2.5MPH on average with light wind. Going into a good chop it will go lower of course. That speed was working really well for me in Canada last week and actually had to set the RPM at 680 going into the wind to keep it above 2MPH. Any slower and I will go with the electric TM.
I have a 19P Rev 4 prop. |

not a vrod, but my i/o goes about 3.5mph I toss out 2 of the minnkota drift socks from the bow and I can get down to 1.3mph.
Nautica also has a set of pro troller smart tabs that mount on your transom if your wanting to check those out. |

Really???
My 275 will troll at 1.6 on flat calm water. The only thing I use my troll control for is to speed it up, not slow it down. I've always understood the mid-range Verados to be a bit fast - 2.5 is about as low as they go. But the 6 cylinder Verados troll down slower. You're the first person I've ever heard say the 6 cylinder Verado only slows down to "3-4" mph. Mine will go more-than-half-slower than that, with a 21 pitch prop. |

This spring after a long day of fishing the batteries on the TM died, we switched to the 175, and we able to get it down to about 2.1 without a sock, with a sock as slow as 1.3.

the other question is, what are you guys using to measure trolling speed?
if you are not comparing apples to apples its not a valid comparison
