I haven't tried it but I have purchased some for the next trip

"Every year around this time the fly's start showing up and over the years I have tried different remedies but the best one and the one I use is Horse Stable Spray. I buy Bronco equine Spray made by the Farnum company and spray it around in the boat periodically. Do not spray it on yourself but all around the boat. It works and you can fish without the company of these little pests."

Thanks Hutch, great info

Of course, you are wearing long pants, with long socks to protect your legs and ankles.

Also the use of fingerless gloves is also a good thing to have on to protect your hands from the insects.

Covering the skin is done all of the time when you have massive insect conditions. In your case, you have a massive insect condition - do yourself a favor and cover up.

+2 the only real cure.
In Canada my friend loves to wear shorts and I have to hear him swatting and moaning all day long, I am sure I do twice as much fishing as he does. I'm fishing, and he is swatting or applying more repellent.

Thermacell, worked great last week on Lake Erie when the flies started biting. It was nice that when it was 90 degrees out we didn't need to have a long sleeve shirt and pants on just fired up the Themacell and kept on fishing.

And, PJ is right...the floor does get slippery.

Dish soap for household use too:

I use a few drops of dish soap in a shallow dish with water and honey to rid the house of little red ants and fruit flies. Works perfectly. They sip it and die instantly.

yeah, thats true it does dry up but I would rather use that than an insecticide

Some of the resorts I have stayed at in Canada have placed moth balls inside mesh netting and they swear it reduces the fly problem. I have tried it as well and it does seem to help.

Bob,
With 90 degree weather and a bright sun, your body will actually be cooler if you have loose long clothing over your entire body.

You won't find desert folks running around in the desert without every square inch of skin covered. They do that for a very good reason - survival.

It also really helps to retard possible skin cancer exposure.
