For trolling/bouncing I like a casting rod and reel. If getting casting gear get the medium weight and medium action. Some rods have the weight and action on them. Others just one. If just one get the medium. If your just bouncing and trolling get the abu garcia 6500 line counter-it is light enough to hold in your palm when bouncing and has a line counter for trolling. It is not a good casting reel if you wnat to cast spinner baits for bass though.

You can get by with spinning gear if you have to and dont troll much.

When it comes down to rod and reel choice-you really need to try them out!
See if a friend ahs a rod/reel combo you want and use it for a weekend.
