I have read about problems with water in fuel causing injector failers.
I read up on other motors and found they all can have issues.
That said I pulled the trigger on a new Starweld 18 with the 115 Etec.
The Etec is amazing. I also run XD100 and plan on leaving the motor set at the 50:1 ratio.
The 115 has exceeded my expectations so far, as with everything time will tell.
I feel better about the Etec after running it than I did on the day I bought it.
I`d like to have a second boat that had a 50 hp Etec, everyone seems to say these are the crown jewel of the Etec brand.

I have had my 75hp E Tec for 6 years now. Bought it new with my boat in 2006. I can't say enough good about this motor. I have put over 500 hours on it, and it still starts first bump of the key every time. It SIPS fuel and oil. It is as quiet as a 4 stroke, and sounds really sweet wide open. The only issue (other than some initial rigging problems--dealers fault) is that it would go through plugs about every 180 to 200 hours when I trolled a lot. Bought a kicker so that is not an issue any longer. It pushes my boat on plane very quickly, and gets me up to around 33mph WOT with a 13"x13 pitch prop. When I had a 15 pitch it would push me about 38 mph. I have never winterized mine. Living in NM I fish year round. I just tilt the motor down and bump the key to get the last of the water out. Winterizing is a breeze however. There are a couple of simple steps, and you do everything from the helm.

Thanks for the reply's

It is a great motor, but no it is not quieter than a 4 stroke.

I have a 2008 75 E-TEC tiller model on a 2007 Lund Explorer1700. The E-TEC is one sweet piece of machinery! Instant starts, sips fuel and oil, quiet, great torque and easy off season storage!

My 115 Etec is quiet up till you get into 4000rpm range then it gets as loud as any other two stroke.
At idle up to 2500 RPM its nearly as quiet as a fourstroke.
I can hear my Etec running at idle. Some Fourstrokes are so quiet you can`t hear them.
I would have to believe the small Etecs are quieter than my 115 making them very quiet .
I`d right now would put the Etec at the #1 spot on my shopping list.
I`m new to Etec so I hope my opinon doesn`t change in time.
I always thought OMC was the best years ago so I have a bit of bias as well.
There`s not a new outboard out there that I would not buy they are all good.

Default Great motor but...

So this motor runs very well and has alot of tourqe but the tiller handle is junk. I ran this 2012 75 on a 1785 Yarcraft tiller and the handle is very akward compared to the new Merc's, Yammy's, and Honda's that I have expirence with. When you take your hands off it bounces like crazy, has akward turn and throttle tension hardware, is very long and thin and the steer hydralic has a giant ugly arm unlike the others i described above.

Again it ran great but for how much time I have my hand on a tiller handle these is alot of area for imprvement here IMO.
