Default R Bend Spinners-Why?

Why do some companies use R bend wire forms instead of twisted wire on their spin rigs? No matter how tight my knots are they seem to slip and foul the blades. Are there advantages to the R bends I haven't figured out?

Default r bend preferred

i do a lot of bass fishing and prefer the r bend because with the twisted wire braid can get stuck in the twists so tight that you have to cut off and re tie

R-bend takes less time to bend (ie time is money). Also I find them easier to adjust.

I think there perhaps can be a little more lively/different action with the r bend. I personally don't like them, for the reasons given. Also, occasionally the line can slide up to the swivel during the fish landing process.

To prevent many occurrences of the line sticking- in-the-loop-wire scenario, try slowing then stopping the cast just before the bait hits the water. This straightens the line and eliminates a high percentage of the problem. Also helps when using other baits which frequently hang up on the cast. A snap, or leader also can be used.

When using R bend spin rigs, I always add a bit of round plastic to prevent the line from slipping out of the bend. To make the round plastic band, I find a piece of electrical wiring and cut off a band from the outer plastic coating of the wire. It works great. Stays nice and tight and I'm sure that it does not reduce the vibrations very much. The plastic also comes in a few different colours too.

I have to admit that I rarely use spinner baits because there are no bass in my region and I rarely come across heavy weed growth. But I do use the larger sizes for pike every now and then. I like the way they bump off the sunken logs because most of the rivers in my region were used for floating logs to the lumber mills.

Hawg,
If you have a bunch of R style bouncers and don't like them; a pair of pliers grabbing the R and giving it a twist will turn it very quickly into a twisted weight. It takes about 5 seconds per weight.

I dislike R style for the reasons mentioned and took care of the issue with a pliers as soon as I noticed that I had some R style weights, rather than the twisted weights that I much prefer.

I prefer the R bend bouncers easier to tie the palomar to with braid. I only use braid with bouncers and the braid has never slipped on me but that is just me. Caught an 11.5 pound walleye with this and a 28 pound northern no slip and many others.

I wold highly recommend you not try this with a high quality titanium wire spinner baits. The less expensive soft wire ones may be just fine.

Bill, I made tackle for a living and you're right. I can assure you that wouldn't work with titanium wire. As for the expense- r bend and twisted wires are done on a different machine but the cost difference would be so small it wouldn't be a factor.
