February 2011 I bought two brand new Accudepth Plus 27W linecounter reels. Second trip with them one of the linecounters intermittently. Yesterday neither linecounter worked. I have tried to use the reels on three trips total. Anyone have any idea what the deal is and how I can get them working?
Thanks

The counter isnt turning? I assume you have tried resetting the counter? I've got 4 of these reels and never had the slightest of problems with them.
I'd call Daiwa and tell them what you got going on, they have been very helpful for me with a couple spinning reels. |

CS,
Your reel came with a parts schematic. Carefully disassemble the reel and figure out the problem. Normally these 2nd generation reels are quite trouble free. REW |

Last night I tried fiddling around with the counter to see if it was sticking somehow. One definitely has something up with the line counter. THe reset button seems like its messed up, it doesn't pop back up fully and when I pull it all the way up sometimes the counter disengages as welll as when it doesn't come all the way back up.
THe other reel I can't explain. I messed with it for a half an hour free spooling and then engaging the spool and watching the counter. About 30% of the time the line counter failed to work. I spoke with Daiwa late yesterday and they recommended that I send them in for them to have a look rather than pulling them apart and trying to sort it out on my own. I told them I didn't want to stick a bunch of money in the reels because according to the website for service its $15 a pop to have them look at them plus what ever the have in parts and then shipping back to me. I guess I will wait and see what they have to say and for now I will only be running 4 boards.

CS,
If the store is near - where you bought the reels, you might just bring the reels back to the store and see if they will exchange them for you. Many times, the stores will bend over backward to take care of customers. They will then just send the reels back for replacement. REW |

REW,
I bought them at Marine General which unfortunately is about 5 hours up the road. I sent them back to Daiwa, they got them on the 9th. Checked today and they said they haven't looked at them yet so I guess I need to settle for running four lines or spring for more reels but no more Accudepth plus. I'm thinking it might be time to consider whether Daiwa is a good investment in gear from a support standpoint. I have never had a shimano or Abu reel take this long to get looked at and repaired and back in my hands even during the peak period like this time of the year is. Time will tell I guess.

without sounding rude, why have you had to send shimanos, and abu (let alone daiwas) back to the factory? out of the 20 some line counters I have now or the previous 20+ before this or the countless baitcast and spinning reels, only problem I have had was with 2 okuma convectors that were shipped missing a set of drag washers. Not including drags, clickers and normal maintenance.
As started earlier those reels are work horses, first time i've heard off them breaking. They are not known to be overly smooth but for the money they are probably best bang for the buck. Last edited by Papascott; 07-19-2012 at 02:20 PM. |

Not taking it as rude at all.
My experience with other reel companies has been they get in touch with you and get it resolved quick especially this time of the year. Daiwa seems a bit slower than my past experiences. Having said that somebody here must have got the word out or it was just coincidence but I had a call from Daiwa that I missed. Sounds like they are taking a look at the reels now so I imagine I should have some resolution relatively shortly. As to my past experiences, I sent a Shimano symetre back because the spinning reel got hard to turn. Shimano replaced it. Seems there was a known issue with the gear train in that model. Had it happen to the same model reel the next spring same result. The Abu was one of the round reels and the gears simply got worn and sloppy after years of fishing. I sent it in they got in touch told me that new gears were needed and shipped it back for a reasonable charge. Always nice quick turn around.

he said that the stores were a 5 hour drive away. 10 hours there and back.
I use a clip on Shakespeare line counter that cost me 15 dollars. Works great. Even lights up when night fishing. Very accurate and works great with fine line too. More accurate than a line counter reel that actually counts the number of turns of the spool and not the length of the line. |
