That's the conundrum isn't it. I went the 2 boat route. Use a 16' tiller on the inland lakes. I have a starcraft fishmaster for Erie. My erie boat has to much freeboard for the inland lakes. The sides act like sails and you would end up drifting to fast for the walleye. But for Erie I want that freeboard, wide beam, and deep vee. It makes fishing more comforatble and safe.
That's really where the consideration lies, how do you fish when on Erie, and how far out are you going to go. You need something that can get you out to your fishing grounds and back safely. I was out on Erie this weekend out of Conneaut. I was out 5-7 miles to get walleyes. Nice easy ride in and out with the nice weather. But the lake can turn nasty quick. When that happens it's not a place I would want to be in a small boat.
Another point about two boats. We use our 16' tiller to troll for Steelhead out of Conneaut in the fall. We troll around the outside/inside of the harbor and up the river. My fishmaster sits to high out of the water to get under the bridge to go from the harbor into the river.
