To help solve your $3.00 per bag of ice, try freezing some 12 oz. plastic pop bottles filled with water in your freezer at home. I very seldom buy ice.

I agree. I'm cheap....just ask anyone that knows me....I fill plastic "shoe boxes" with water and freeze in my freezer. Haven't bought ice in years. I figured all you Canadian fellow's had fruit cellars filled with Hudson Bay blocks of ice, covered in sawdust

What about the cost of not being at work on that day - $465.
What about the depreciated cost of your boat and motor for one day of fishing - $723.

What about the depreciated cost of your tow vehicle for one day of fishing. $823.

What about the cost of the gear - fishing gear- that you use for one day to catch the fish - $321.

What about the cost of your electronics for one day to catch the fish, $143.

I think that if you add up these costs, you will find that your fresh caught perch are much closer to $500 per lb. than $16 per lb.

Be safe

LOL. Let's see. With your calculations, my $51K rig is worth $0 after 70.5 trips, and my new truck is worthless after 54.6 trips to the lake.

I prefer block ice, as well. I fill small one gallon plastic pails with water, freeze them in the chest freezer, and use the blocks of ice. When I get home, I rinse them off, put them in a kitchen bag, and re use them. Four of them will last a half of a season, and that's using them often.

Ditto on the plastic bucket. I do that also. Ice can $5 you to death if you fish enough.

I don't have a chest freezer so the small bottles work fine, and easy to refreeze.

Default Death by 1000 Cubes

OK boys I have modified my behaviour!
I went fishing again yesterday and brought the perch home in the cooler with ice that I paid way too much for (poverty $2.99 at a time) so thanks for the water freezing tips. You are all correct at how quickly a trip gets expensive when you look at things like the cost of ice, stopping for coffees, buying worms, etc. For the record though, I don't think it is always wise to think too much about the actual cost of any hobby!
So, last question then: Do you just put the fish in the cooler with the ice, or do you knock them out first?
Thanks again for the enjoyable and informative read!
Jim

radnine

Dont forget the cost of gas.....the biggest winner in any of our trips(and by quite a margin) is anyone/everyone in the Fuel supply chain.

The price of gas has certainly kept me fishing lakes closer to home. And Radnine it has been suggested it is best to bleed them in the live well then put them on ice. Clip the gills with a scissors and put them in the live well a few mins. to bleed out, then put in cooler.
