Dicks in my town had the Shimano Symetre 4000FJ marked down to 69.00 on sale so I bought one. It is a large spinning reel, larger than I normally get. The price drew me in more than need. Do any of you regularly use suchs a large spinning reel for walleye??
Thanks! Andy |

I am using FJ3000s on my walleye gear. I bought that size cause I wanted them to do double duty on the saltwater inshore gear. While they work and I am happy with them they are much larger than I need (or even want). I have been debating putting FJ1000s on my walleye rods. I wish they would make a FJ1500 or FJ2000 as even the FJ2500s are even a bit large.
Honestly a 500 series is more than enough for most fresh water species. A 1000 series is about right for walleye/pike rods, especially if you fish braid.

I have numerous 4000 series reels. I use them on all my med-heavy rods which I use for bass, pike and anything on the great lakes.
Anytime Im throwing heavy lures or fishing heavy cover. I have no application for walleye with those rod/reel combos. |

Good cat fish river reels, spooled up with some 50 lb test Big Game line.
Whatever the application, it would be one where you are not holding the rod/reel combo. Shore fishing river systems, that type of thing. Prior to the Arbor type large spool, small reels, they may have had an application for casting, but they are heavy to hold. |

Titan,
Keep and enjoy the reel. Sure it is a bit larger than what you really need. But, you will find that the large reel and retrieve rate will allow you to make much longer casts than with a 1000 sized reel. I generally use reels that use this size spool - pretty much all of the time any more when fishing. I just like the larger spool for the better line flow, the fewer loops in the spinning line and the overall smoother line flow and operation of the larger spool found on reels of this size.
