I have 220 hours on my 2011 ETEC that's under warranty till 2014 so I'll probably have to pay it twice.

You are getting taken dude!!! I just had mine in last year and it was under $150!!! I change the lower unit grease every fall myself. They changed plugs and put it on the computer to update it!!! Wow, I would get another quote from someone else maybe?
To the OP, I don't know where they get $1800 in savings? It is advertising number tricks or something? Basically, I like the etec because you are getting the same fuel mileage as a four stroke, it is lighter and has better low end, you don't have to do oil changes, they are pretty quiet for a 2 stroke, it winterizes itself and basically just don't have to mess with it! Since we were considering family sports, I wanted a motor that could perform on that aspect without having to change props around or add the stupid looking hydrofoils. If it was purely a fishing boat and I didn't care about low end performance, then a four stroke would have been ok I guess. I have been very happy with my motor going on year 5 without a single problem. When I ordered, the etec was more expensive than the other motors and I didn't care. It has been a solid performing motor that has done it all and from all the posts I have read over the years, isn't as affected by weight changes in the boat either. If you want a solid motor that performs, is lighter weight and you don't have to think about doing maintenance on, than get an etec. If you don't mind doing the extra stuff and have to get the ultra quiet 4 stroke, well, then you have other choices......
