Default Tough Decision

I have a hard time making the decision as to destination... What would you folks suggest? My oldest son will complete the dental school exam on Tuesday. He has worked hard all summer preparing. He called the other day and wanted to fish the rest of the week. Here is the problem. We love Mobridge, 8 hr drive one way. Sources say the fishing is slowed way down. OR Merritt Reservoir in Nebraska with no out of state licences to buy about 5 hours but not knowing enough to be sure of the fishing. Big Mac 5 to 6 hours, or a lake I fish all of the time 2.5 hours away and can catch wipers all of the time. Never fished Big Mac. OR, should I use the out of state money to put the boys on the boat with a guide for a day? (I would love to reward my sons and their friend Jesse. Steven will graduate UNO this year and has earned scholarships for nearly ALL of his education. Youngest son has earned a Regents for full tuition at UNL. I would like this to be special. Yes, bragging about our kids is what I do!)

The fishing at Mobridge has slowed, but walleyes are still being caught. I'm headed there 7/22 and coming back 8/7. This time of year they are harder to find and move around more.

What about a fly in to the northwest territories?
It would be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a very unusual part of this world and it has great graying and other fishing.

Lake Oahe has become my favorite place to fish. Not only is the fishing still pretty good with the right guide but I think the boys would love the scenery as well.

Default Lake Oahe

The fishing from Bush landing all the way to the dam is on fire. Need to catch a lot of fish to get to a nice sized limit but catching enough to do so is no problem. I would bet a shiny new bare gold hook would catch fish right now. I just back from a trip there last weekend and my father just back from a trip there yesterday. In all my years of fishing Oahe I have never seen the fishing so easy. Pitching jigs, running bottom bouncers, lindy rigging, and trolling plugs are all producing huge numbers of fish. Fish shallow or fish deep...at this point it really doesn't matter. No wind, nice chop, or huge rollers...doesn't matter. Just bring plenty of bait and don't bother trying to use a whole nightcrawler, just use half. Find fish on the graph and they will bite. I highly suggest going to Oahe right now, odds are very good you will not regret it.

But not in the budget. Great idea for sometime down the road.

Default decision

Think I have a solution. I used some of the money I save in out of state permits and driving and hired a guide on Merritt for the boys. We can use what we learn from the guide to fish the lake more often. The guide told me today several species are biting well.

Default thank you

Yes I have been blessed! I would be remiss not to include a daughter who will study this year in Spain. She is a Spanish/ Communications major. With three kids in college scholarships are critical!
