Default ranger outboards

What is the best performing 250 outboard for a ranger 620 vs. I have a 08 with a 250 yamaha 4 stroke i like it but I only get 55 mph and slowcoming out of water with livewell full. Does a 250 etech perform better? Is it lots lighter? Or what motor is best?

55mph how 'fricken' fast do you want to go? Do you fish or just race around the lake?

My etec hits about 58mph, fully loaded. When my live well is full it still comes out of the hole a little slow.

Akrech,
For a test only -
Empty your boat 100%.
i.e. no trolling motor,
no trolling motor batteries,
Nothing in the livewell.
5 gallons of gas in the tank and absolutely nothing else in or on the boat except you, your life jacket and your gps. i.e. no anchors, oars, paddles, junk, tools, or any thing else. No fishing gear of any kind. Nothing in any storage lockers.

Then, repeat the hole shot and speed test.

By the way, do you have your motor mounted as high as possible to still get a decent hole shot and not get excessive prop venting?

Often, the only reason for a boat and its rig lack of performance, is weight. Reduce weight and the performance really can go up.

-------------------
When you get your test results, compare them to the results you have with your normal stuff loaded into your boat.

Now, with all of the stuff that you took out of your boat before testing that is scattered across your garage floor - take a good scale and weigh everything that you had in your. If it is necessary to have in the boat - weigh it and load it back into the boat. When done, total the weight that you just loaded into the boat.

Now retest the boats performance again, with the stuff you loaded, plus yourself and your life jacket.

------------------
You might be or might not be surprised at any difference.

Maybe I missed it but what prop are you running? Props can make a huge difference and the best props can still be tuned to better suit your needs.

A friend of mine just bought a 2008 620 with an Etec 250 HO. I fished out of it last weekend and these were my impressions... we had 3 in the boat, full gas and livewell, gear, and kicker but I don't know what prop/pitch he had.

The motor brought the boat on plane pretty quick and it was quiet. I was surprised how quiet the motor was. We didn't run it wot, but did bring it up to 55 on some flat water. I would guess at wot and trimmed, we would have hit 60 mph. The motor drank a lot of fuel during that run (I suppose no different than any others in that class). We ran about 45 mph turning 4000 rpm most of the time. The one thing that I didn't like was the throttle response, it was very touchy and took some getting used to. Whether the throttle response was a rigging issue or just how it is, I'm really don't know.

I'm not an Etec guy (local dealer doesn't sell them) but that opened my eyes to some of the things posted by others on this site about their Etec's... nice motor.

You could experiment like REW says.

Or, you could just get a Merc 250 ProXS.

if it is slow out of the hole you can relocate items from the stern to the bow.
