I’ve been reading your posts for a couple of months and I guess it’s time to try something new. I'm using a Pflueger President (30 size) on a St. Croix Premier 6'6" 2 piece med light/fast rod. I'm heading to Ontario in September. We’ll be fishing eye’s, pike, and smallies. Which of these fancy new lines should I try? I will have some time to “practice” with it over the next month or so.
Also, I would normally spool this reel with 115 yards of 6# mono. With these new lines with small diameters do I put a more line on? Thanks for your advice. I think I've learned alot from WC. Dan |

The only reason I like Braided or superlines is because I mostly vertical jig and if I get snagged with PP 10/2 I can usually pull the hook straight and get my jig back. This saves me my jig and also the time it would take to retie. With 6lb mono I'd be breaking off to much.
Everything else about superlines I detest. |

I still see a lot of guys on here using Power Pro. In the musky fishing world most people have ditched it for other brands. They say when PP got bought out a year or so ago and they started making it in China the quality went down the drain?

Port,
If you are going to Ontario in Sept, I would just spool up with a good grade of 8 lb mono and move on. A very big difference between 6 and 8 lb breaking strength. You will get fewer nuisance breaks offs with 8 lb than 6 lb. If you like, spool a spare spool with 10 lb power pro, but I wouldn't be surprised that you will be using the mono most of the time. I'd just go to your regular tackle store and see what braided line they have on sale.
Any of these would be fine IMO: PowerPro or Powerpro Superslick Sufix 832 or Sufix Performance Cortland Masterbraid [although, I am not sure if they make smaller lb test] P-Line Spectrex Spiderwire Stealth Tuf-Line XP Daiwa Samurai |

From what I understand PP was a good line until it was bought out by Shimano in 2008. then the quality started slipping, like finding bad splices in the new line mid spool.

I've been using Power Pro for the last couple of years on the four reels I use most often. Overall, I'm very pleased with it and will continue to use it. However I find the buzzing of the line running through the guides a bit annoying when I have a fish on in Canada. Two of the reels are going to be refitted with fluorocarbon line because of the noise before we head north in a couple of months. Try whatever new type of line you want on one reel before you spend a lot and find out you don't care for it. Nimstug The DH is an abomination. |

IMO braids are best on casting reels, for spinning reels I much prefer FireLine or NanoFil. If you're new to super lines I would suggest Fireline over Nanofil. Your reel probably came with two spool, fill one up with 6lb FireLine and one with 8lb mono and you should be good to go. I would also bring along a spare spool or two of line. With the expense you have in getting up there what is a couple of bucks for a spare spool of line just in case something happens?
