Last night I broke my 4th leader this year
I'm running 10# 882 braid with a 10# Fluor. leader on a DS rod (I start with a 8-10' leader that way I get a few re ties out it) And I have loosed the drag up but it's still a problem breaking off useing a double uni knot All the breaks are on soild fish. i've felt the rod load up The rod is a Med 7-2 Kitsler and it's a very soft tip One guy recommened super glueing the knot and I'm leaning towarrds a small swivel (but I don't like the iseal of the weight or the swivel running thru the guides) So, Is there a better line to line knot Thanx,

So you are breaking at the knot?
Sounds like you could be burning the flouro when you are synching the knots? or you could have some bad line? Maybe try new leader line. The knot is a good one so it is not the knot that is the problem. Try straight supra line or regular mono.

If the uniknkot isn't working for you, go to a fly fishing website and try one of the leader-to-tippet knots they recommend. One site is Orvis.com. and there are many others.

Manx,
Use a tiny swivel. Use a palamor knot to tie the swivel onto a 10# test leader of Trilene XT. Then, use a palamor to tie the swivel on to the end of the braid. Throw away your fluorocarbon leader, stick with the trilene xt and the swivel and you will have no more broken knots and or leaders. I did this several years ago, when I was having the identical problem. I really see 0 reason to use fluorocarbon compared to a high grade mono and I have 0 knot and breaking issues with the mono, compared to numerous issues with knots breaking on the fluoro line. Be safe REW p.s. An even better thing to do, is to simply tie your bait, hook or lure directly to the braid. In most waters, I have found 0 difference in hookups and boated fish - when fishing with no leader compared to a clear leader. In some heavily fished gin clear waters, I will sometimes, but not always put on a leader if I find that others in the boat are doing better than I am. But, I generally always start with the braid tied directly to the lure or hook and see if I am getting any fewer bites than others in the boat using identical lures and or bait. If I do find that I am getting fewer bites, then I will grudgingly switch to a tiny swivel and a clear leader of a few feet. |

I found if I don't wet the knot while tying braid will cut the fluorocarbon with these light small diameter lines.I also found an albright knot or a crazy alberto knot to work better. Check these out:

Thanx Guys
The Flouro line is Seagers (I've gone thru the bad Fluoro line all ready) On the other DS rod I did run all flouro line. And never had any problems with breakage or the knots The problem was it doesn't cast as far and it would knot up or stick together after a couple trips even useing a line conditioner. So I like the braid. Good feel and it casts a mile I'll give the mono a try It sounds better then a small swivel running thru the guides

You will not regret using mono instead of fluorocarbon. If abrasion resistance is a concern, you can use a harder mono or a hybrid or copolymer line that combines the caracteristics of mono with a hard absorption resistant exterior coating.
I would really like to here your opinion about using your new leader material. Last edited by Dabluz; 07-20-2012 at 10:19 AM. |

+1 on the Alberto Knot. I use 10# Fireline tied to 8# Seaguar InvisX crappie jigging (which means I break off alot) and I haven't had a line to leader knot fail in over 2 years. It looks tougher to tie than it really is, watch the video and practice it at home. BTW, my thinking is the same as yours on leader length, I fish 7' rods and never tie on less than a rod length of leader.
Here's another video on how to tie the Alberto: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J56O3...layer_embedded |

I am a huge fluoro versus mono fan but one weakness I have found with the fluoro is it gets permanently weaker if it gets cooked. I take care not to leave my leader dispenser or rigged rods in a vehicle or rod locker to get baked. Just wondering if your line got hot?
