Default Power Steering on Pro Guide

How necessary is the Mertens on a Mercury or the Titan system on a Yamaha in the 90 HP on an 1825 Pro guide, the titan is around 1200 and the Mertens more than double that.

necessary? NO, but very nice, if you can afford it. Titan works just fine and some say you do not need it at all, but I would get the titan and not look back, my opinion, I have had both

x2, what Dave said. I've run the 75 Opti I had with and without the system, it certainly makes it more comfortable, especially on longer runs. But absolutely necessary, no.

FWIW, keep your eyes on the classified. Every now and then a used system shows-up for sale.

Default Agreed

Would not own one without at least the titan. Good Luck in finding a Merten's power system. Used is probably the best you will do. The new Mercury power system is very nice!

Default power steering

Make sure your trim tabs are adjusted correctly and IMO it is not necessary.

If you have everything set up right there is no need for either in my opinion. If money is an issue then do yourself a favor and try the boat without it for a while, good chance you end up saving yourself a lot of money. If you are getting steering torque with that setup then you have it trimmed wrong or something else isn't set up right. I fish mostly leech and mille lacs and have 130 hrs on my motor and have never once felt once in even in the roughest conditions that I needed it. That said, I guess the titan system might be a nice safety feature if you were to lose grip in rough conditions and it would be nice for holding the motor while towing as well.

I ran my 75 E-TEC for almost two seasons without a Titan Steering System. After I put the Titan on I never looked back. It is great on long runs. No it's not necessary but very nice to have. I think the "Power Steering" is a little overkill on any motor less than 115.

one other important thing to consider, when you are running a large tiller and something happens to let you loose your grip on the handle it locks in place, a very safe feature. I hit a large wave on LOW once, the trolling motor bracket on the transom broke, I looked over my shoulder, lost the handle, it turned sharply by it self and I nearly went overboard, with the titan the motor will stay in place, obviously these events are rare but you never know.

I have the 1825 PG with 90hp on it. Moving up from a 50hp I was thinking I would need power steering. After 9 days in Canada and putting 242 miles in the driver seat.....I think not!!! With 4 guys and gear in the boat..... It handled easyier then my 50hp.

1725 Proguide/115 Opti.Power assist for sure not needed if everything is set up properly. Probably nice for safety though.
