Default carpeting gunwales

I have a 1993 Lund Pro V with wide gunwales that get vety hot and i am assuming they are aluminum. Has anyone put carpet on them? Does marine carpet adhesive work on metal or do I need a special kind? Any help would be appreciated especially pics.

Smile carpet adhesive

Any marine carpet adhesive should work just fine. Just follow the instructions on the can. Good luck!

Default Alumacraft

I think it's a good idea, a lot of the wide gunnel Alumacraft's have carpet, it's nice for walking around on the gunnels when site fishing, a lot better traction than the aluminum. Marine carpet adhesive should work fine.

Have you ever had a boat with carpet on the gunwales?

I had a Sylvan with carpet on the gunwales. The gunwales are cooler than my Pro-V and maybe a bit less slippery.

On the other side of the aurgument, is the fact if it was windy or cool, I hated it. The carpet was always wet and if you leaned over or on it, your sleaves or pants alwys ended up soaked. If someone turned around and sat on it, their pants got soaked.

For me, I will NEVER go back to carpet.

To each their own, everyone has their own needs.

What JAK said.......wet, wet, wet! My fishing partner has a sylvan and we both talk about it often when leaning over the boat to release a fish or accidently sit on it. Likes to catch hooks as well. As for walking on the gunwhale.....at my age that would be just asking for a swim.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree with JAK on this one. My last boat had wide, carpeted gunwales. Dry they were great. Any wetness at all and they were miserable. Even the dripping from landing a fish or two. If they came in over the side and not up over the transom... You could count on a wet hind end sooner or later.

My new boat... Aluminum, with no chance of carpet.

Default Rhino Line

Maybe you could rhino line your gunwales I think they would stay cooler and provide traction.

Carpet on the gunnels is really not a very good idea.
I have been in a few boats with carpet on the gunnels and virtually everyone, including the owner hate the carpet.

But, on the other hand, the use of 3M non skid surfaces work very well.

You can buy these at your local hardware store in various colors.
Clean the gunnels, cut the pieces to size, take the backings off the coverings and stick in place.

I use this tape in quite a few different areas on the boat, as well as on the truck and even in the home.

The tape sticks very well, is cool to the touch on hot days and provides non slip walking on, for example in entering and leaving the boat.

Take care

Does the adhesive stay intact in on hot gunnels without turning into a sticky goo?
