My buddy that suggested the glue had a couple of reasons to use it. If the carpet is only stapled, no matter how well, it is going to have friction sliding back and forth on the board as you load, unload and travel thus wearing thin spots in the carpet quicker. And even a good piece of fir is going to start to rot after 5 or 6 years so you are going to replace it anyway. Made sense to me, but it is true once you glue the carpet on there is no removing it and re-carpeting.
