Default Anyone have issues with Seaguar abrazx?

Trolling lake Erie yesterday. Dipsey on braid with a 3.5 ft abrazx leader. Nice hit; reeled in only to find 1ft of leader remained - clean break in line. Anyone have issues with abrazx? 20# new box, fresh leader.

Or should I chalk it up to a nice steelie?

First time I used flouro leader trolling. Went back to braid after incident.

My bet is there was a nick in the line or the leader was tangled around the dipsey making a weak spot.

I've tied hundreds of harnesses and tons of leaders with 20 abraisx. Never an issue unless there was a nicked up line.

Did I read that right, you use braid for leaders now?

The rest of the day I did.

Background: Got my first boat for Lake Erie 2 weeks back. Saturday was our maiden voyage - for a perch trip. No luck - switched to Walleye and lost 3; 2 to swivel failures and 1 to the seaguar leader break.

I went back to braid for the remainder of the evening, but only landed one. I prefer flouro - use it in my drop shot rigs for smallies.

Thanks for your feedback Papascott - figured it was a nick or twist - wanted to be sure no one else had issues with seaguar. Do not want to have another afternoon like that!

Do you use snubbers between the dipsy and the leader? I did not have any at the time.

Thx

Snubbers, depends on what rods im using and if steelhead are in the area. I use long soft action rods for dipseys. they absorb the shock from the strike and head shakes which is imho super important with the braided mainline.

How are you setting your drags? 3 break offs in one day is more than just coincidence?

Yeah. I was not really prepared for the walleye troll. I forgot to check drag on the reels... Might be the culprit. Need to adjust the dipsy tension too I am sure.

Picked up a box of seaguar blue label flouro in 30# to try as well

Get rid of the fluorocarbon and use a good clear mono or copolymer line.

Funny how some guys will blame a small nick in the fluorocarbon for when it breaks yet step up to the pulpit to say that fluorocarbon is more abrasion resistant than mono. If it were more abrasion resistant, it would not have a small nick in it.

I've tried all kinds of fluorocarbon lines in the 6 to 35 lb range and I was very disappointed. I still use 35 lb test fluorcarbon to make crawler harnesses but I use 8 lb test Fireline in front of the harness and the hooks for the harness are tied to a good 8 lb test mono. Just the blades and beads are on the 35 lb test fluorocarbon. Eventually, I will run out of the 35 lb test fluorocarbon and I will use a hard monofilament for the blades and the beads.

Default Don't Donate

After I donated several Wolverine Silver Streaks (after switching to Vanish) I changed to 30# mono and haven't looked back. With Dipseys I always use snubbers for Steelies/Rainbows. Leaders are 4-6 ft.

Default success yesterday

I made it back out to Erie this weekend and I am pleased to say we landed 6 in the 7# - 9# range. Lost 2 at the boat.

I used seaguar blue label flouro 30# and no issues. It "feels" different than the abrazixs. I will give flouro another chance - one more line break though and it is over...

They were catching some steelies in the area, so I did use snubbers on Erie yesterday, thanks!

Default Fluoro

I used 20lb Seaguar carbon pro for years with no problem, and am now very happy with abrasxz also.

I use it for both harnesses and as leader on mainline, with 40lb power pro hi-vis yellow line. Awesome set-up for Erie. Many 9lb fish, with zero problems.

I find the fluoro IS way more abrasion resistant when Mr. Northern comes to visit than mono, by far. They cut through 20lb big game like nothing. Happens very seldom with the Seaguar.

Also, I use 100lb Fluor for my Muskie leaders, like many people, but NOBODY uses mono for that, as it simply nicks and breaks too easily. Biggest 'lunge was 47" on fluoro leader.

Will never go back to mono...but my wife does love it. She uses my old Trilene for hanging Christmas decorations; the green looks festive.
