I did quite a bit of research last month on air rifles and I ended up going with a Benjamin Trail .177 air rifle with a nitrogen gas piston instead of the spring piston. It is super quiet. It's no louder than those old pump Crosman BB guns. Cabelas had them for $179 last month.

Hawg: I have the same model airgun. Try using heavier pellets. When I use lighter pellets, my airgun will break the sound barrier and make a distinct crack. With a heavier pellet I do not get that crack, just the noise of the gun functioning.

I have found that if I open my deck sliding door about two inches and keep the muzzle inside the house, little noise goes outside. You do need to be careful to not shoot your door frame however.

Badgerloader, thats good. I have a piece of would that pivots and holds my back door of the garage open 3/4 inch, then a small bungy cord to hold the door tight to the wood piece. I even cut a notch in the wood to hold the barrel more secure. I can shoot the beaks off the blackbirds now on my feeder. That way they fly into the neighbors yard, who I call the groovy goulies, before they die. Since they never cut their grass they don't even know they're there. Too bad there isn't a season on deadbeat neighbors.

Update, I'm still looking for a new rifle. I found out RWS will completely rebuild an older rifle for $115 & shipping, I will probably do that. I also found out from a lot of phone calls to large on line dealers that the Gas Piston(Nitro Piston) is getting a lot of respect from the big manufacturers and IS quite bit quieter than the spring guns. Here's the strange thing-I couldn't get 1 single person at about 4 or 5 dealers to say a single good thing about Gamo brand rifles. Everybody says good things about Hatsan, but that's about a $300 unit and in the $200 and less Crossman( who makes benjamin) gets the nod because the nitro piston is their technology. Still shopping but the Benjamin Trail or the Crossman Nitro venom are looking like the leaders for my $150-$250 price range.
