I have a older navionics gold plus and was wondering if I could clone the card or what other things I could do with it on my computer, do I have to download a program to do so?

Thanks

It's against their license & punishable by law to do so. Sorry

You can try if you want but I'm 100% sure that you wont succeed.

You are liable to make the card unreadable in your plotter, then land up with nothing. See this thread. http://www.walleyecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=199794

All of the current mapping chips have pretty rock solid anti copying information written into their chips.

In most cases, if an effort is made to copy or duplicate the mapping chip, the original information is destroyed on the chip.

So, do what ever you want with your chip.

Under the fair use provisions of the copyright act, you may make a copy of copyrighted material for backup purposes. I haven't read the license agreement, but it may be more restrictive. I understand there are technical roadblocks to copying the maps which the average Joe isn't likely to defeat.

Probably just boils down to how much you really want a copy, I'd just buy a second one, but I'm betting some 16 year old from the hackers'r'us site could break through the copyright barrier.
Or wipe out the chip...

You can read about SD card copyright management on Wikipedia, you can't copy data onto another card only back onto the original...in other words you can copy the data on the card but you can't emulate the hardware embedded copyright management features designed into the card to put that data onto another similar card.
