One of my better ones happened about 30 years ago when my buddy and I won a lottery/drawing for a duck blind on a remote island Just a short row from the boat ramp. My buddy had this old flat bottomed jon boat that was made out of steel I think(heavy as sin). We painted this old boat in camo colors and constructed the blind all in anticipation of opening day. Opening day comes and we load the boat in the back of my pickup with the bow towards the rear of the truck. We get to the ramp, and as I mentioned the boat weighed a ton, so I had the bright idea of power launching instead of us muscling it off. I pull forward about 20 yards, put her in reverse giver her some gas and then slam on the brakes just shy of the water. Out she flew, and it was then I realized I was a little to close to the water. By the time I got out of the truck the boat was out about 50 feet in the middle of the lake and moving out. My buddy and I just stood there looking at each other and neither of us said a word. Needless to say that was a memorable opening day but not for the usual reasons.

I used to have a Tuffy Marauder on a roller trailer. Ya I unhooked the winch cable before backing down the boat ramp, "bad idea" the worst part was it was crowded at the landing and I could just hear everyone saying to themselves what an idiot as I had to winch the boat back up on the trailer off the black top. Really did a number on my transom mounted transducers.
What led me to do something that dumb was that the rollers were getting really stiff and it was all I could do to push the boat off the trailer even when in the water. Except for that time they decided to roll freely.

Last year a friend of mine, who fishes every day, went down to his usual launch only to notice he had forgot to bring the boat. The dumber part was that he went in the house and told his wife before he hooked it up and left again. The next Tuesday everyone on the trap team knew about it.

Dude, if that's true that is fricken' awesome! Be even funnier if he went to the launch and started backing up the boat (lack of) to the ramp!

I treated myself this year and bought a GLoomis rod and Citica baitcaster reel from Cabelas, I have never spent more than a $150 for any rod/reel combo in my life but I wanted to treat myself...$300+ is what the non-sale price was for this combo up here.

With three young kids its always a challenge to keep any rod from getting stepped on so I've been after the kids constantly to watch where they are stepping when they are in the boat...that rod didn't go into the boat this year until I had them properly trained. Last weekend was our first vacation fishing trip of the year, she came out of protected storage for its maiden voyage.

Got out onto the lake after setting up camp, my golden rod hidden safely in the rod locker...after dropping the trolling motor I asked everyone to move out of the way while I extracted her from the safe...the entire family peanut gallery in the boat was making Oooh and Ahhhh noises as it seen its first daylight...of course the wife says "be careful, don't step on it...you will never live it down!".

I go back into the bow to steer us close to shore muttering under my breath saying "you just watch this!" as I setup the drag for the size lure I was using being extra careful it wasn't too light...basketing the first cast would have been embarrassing in front of the peanut gallery.

Once nicely placed close to shore I slung back and pitched it hard to impress the peanut gallery with the awesome prowess of my casting ability and superior quality of the golden rod...and promptly chucked the rod 10 feet off the side of the boat.

Without missing a beat I dived off the boat...thank god for cork floating handles and shallow water...I grabbed it just as it was going under.

Yep, one of my prouder moments.

You guys crack me up.
Many years ago I had an old 80's chevy pickup used only for hunting, I had a new passenger door in the shop to replace the smashed one that was on the truck. Well I decided to drive that truck to town one day and locked the only set of keys in it. When I realized it, I broke the drivers wing window out to gain access to the door lock. If I would have not been so stupid I would not have had to buy the most expensive piece of glass in the whole truck.
Just a couple weeks ago I hauled the boat to a lake behind my pickup and camper and a buddy was coming to meet me later. Well we hooked the boat behind his pickup to go to the ramp. We launched the boat in our usual manner, back up fast and send the boat out into the lake. As I am floating away from the ramp I realize the boat key is in my pickup a mile away at the camper. Thank goodness for the trolling motor.

Default Muzzleloader hunt

Got up early, snapped a couple of caps to dry up the bore, loaded it up with my favorite load of pyrodex and bullet, loaded it back into the case. Grabbed my coffee thermos and drove 1.5 hours to my hunting area, looked in the back of the truck and you guessed it, the gun was loaded and in the case on my couch at home.

I got many idiot moments but the best one boating related was when I was about 14-15 back in the mid 70's. My friend and I stayed up late one night watching an old James Bond movie, the one with the boat chase where the boats were driving across land and back into the water. Well anyway, the next morning we were out fishing in his dad's boat, an old Mirrocraft 16ft steering wheel w/windshield, and an Evinrude 40hp. One of us got the bright idea to emulate the movie so we unlocked the motor so it could fly up like the movie. We then proceeded to drive at the shore wide open with I am sure big smiles on our faces. We hit the shore and the boat came to a very quick screeching halt on the rocks and sand. Not expecting the sudden stop we both flew hard into the back of the windshield. Neither of us was bright enough to realize we would stop like a car accident so were not even holding on very well. The motor is making all kinds of racket and my friend shuts it off. We both looked at each other moaning and groaning very surprised at what just happened. That wasn't the result in the movie, heck they were even flying through the air as I recall.

I got many others just as stupid but am not that proud of my idiocy so we will leave it at that. But hey, I was young so it doesn't count.
