It has been another good week on the water in western Minnesota! The hi-lite of the weekend was a Sunday morning guide trip on a small local lake chasing walleyes. Though these are supposedly the “dog days of summer” when the walleye bite is tough, someone forgot to tell the fish! We found active fish on the tips of a point where the water drops from 6- 10-feet deep in this shallow lake. Our presentation was a Slick-Stick bottom bouncer and spinner tipped with a nightcrawler. Moving 1.5 mph we were able to catch several fish in the 16-22 inch size range. Also mixed in with the walleyes were several perch in the 9- to 11-inch size range.
Earlier in the weekend, I fished the Le Homme Dieu Chain and Lake Ida in the Alexandria area for bass. The bite here was very good as well. Fishing the deep weedline, partners and I had good success both jig-worm fishing and casting crankbaits. Our jig-worm set-up consisted of a camo-colored Impulse Dip-Stick Worm fished on a Jungle Jig-Loc head and cast up and into the weeds. Jig-Locs are designed to fish in and through weeds making them ideal for this time of year when weedgrowth is peaking. Our crankbait of choice was the LiveTarget Crawfish. This bait dives 8-10 feet, looks just like a crawfish, and has an action the bass love! I have been throwing these baits on the new Carbon X Rods crankbait model in conjunction with a Lew’s Tournament MG baitcasting reel and have been very, very impressed with how far I can cast a bait. Plus, this lightweight combination doesn’t wear me out even after several hours of “chucking and winding!” Until next week, good luck on the water!
