Assuming you are fishing LOTW or Winnepeg Rivers System or Lake Vermillion or any of the Wisconsin Chains
do you want a tiller boat or a console boat and why? Just seeing how far I can get away with in light of the wife. |

You can get both in as big or little as you would want, so it's really about preference vs what works best for any certain body of water.
My last three boats-Deep V aluminum w/console, Glass bass, deep V aluminum tiller |

I fish Minaki every year and have a tiller with a 60. I have no problems although some windy days I wish I had a 1825 Pro Guide with a 90. That being said when I'm out solo my 1600 explorer is the perfect size. When I retire I'm definately going to something in the 1825 Pro Guide size. I'm hoping they make a 1775,1825 Impact tiller or redo the 1800 Alaskan.
I'm strickly a tiller guy. Can't ever see myself with a wheel. Just takes up too much space . Last edited by KSauers; 07-30-2012 at 07:18 PM. |

Long Version......I say go for the tiller. If its too cold you can put on some GoreTex insulated jacket, bibs and a face mask for less than $500 and call it a windshield. It may be deceiving but an 18' tiller looks like it has more fishing space than a 20' wheel boat. Ultimately only you can make the choice....get what suits your style and rip some lips. I use to have a 17.5' walk through windshield boat and I can't believe I made that wasted space work as well as I did for so long.
Short Version......Windshields are for automobiles. Good Luck |

I have caught a ton of fish from a console boat. They a fishing machines and the wives love having a windshield to hide behind. Tillers are fishing machines on steriods. If the wife likes hard core fishing then you may be wanting a tiller. If she is a fair weather fisherman who brings along luxury items to enjoy a day on the water the a console may be what you want.

I had a tiller for many years as I got older the happiest day of my life was going to a dual console boat. Fishing early spring, late winter, middle of winter, or bad weather it is so nice to duck behind a windbreak. Long runs I don`t miss the tiller.

I smoked a lot of left handed tobacco in my youth so my short term memory is more than a little fuzzy but if I recall correctly when I was wet and cold it didn't matter that I had a windshield....I was still wet and cold with 8 square feet of wasted fishing space.
What do you anti-tiller folks do when you get to the fishing spot in cold, wet and windy weather? I will give a nod to a walk through windshield for drifting purposes. Which can be good or bad depending on what you're attempting to accomplish. A little breeze goes a long way with a sail. |
