Default 8 oz. snap weights

Anyone ever used them? Here in some Utah res. we have used them as a make shift downrigger... pulling blades and cranks, any other methods to try? or expereinces? thanks, Dan

I use 16oz. the same way. There's a drop table for the 16's in the Big Water Edition of Precision Trolling (if you can find one).

At times their a lot handier to use than a downrigger, I have both, and I use the drop weight more often..

Your talking 16 ounces

On Erie it's common to catch a 10# fish, and 30 pounders are fairly common on Ontario.

What rod are you using?

Anything from a med. on up will handle 16 oz. without any problem at all.

I know people that use 8oz BB's

They use them in the front of the boat and fish under the the boat trolling spinners
The thought is, there on the bottom and won't get taggled with the rod's in the rear

Default 8 Oz. Snap Weights

I've been using 8 oz. snap weights for three years to pull cranks deep for years. They work great and it's my go to method to catch larger walleyes. I have downriggers but they've been sitting in storage since I started using this method. The rods I use are nothing special, just 8 ft. crankbait trolling rods. I use a 30 foot lead, snap the weights on and let out about as much line as the water is deep, trolling at 2 to 2.5 mph. I adjust slightly depending on the depth a crank will run with 30 feet of line according to the Troller's Bible.
Like I said, they work great and are a fish catching method to get cranks deep.

Mr Gunn
Better be careful with those 16 oz weights, two guys at Blue Water that go by Outlaws that have a bounty on your head. At your suggestion they tried those weights and have spent most of their summer untangling lines and have kept me and Dan rigging new lines for them every week!

Drop Table LOL...how about straight down! All I can think of is that they would do a **** of a job banging up the side of the boat!
