Default Need help in choosing new engine for 2013 Ranger

I just want an engine that will give me good boating experience. I dont need top end speed, most of time, if on plane speed at 20-25. I fish most of time and will use kicker to troll. Now and then grandkids like to tube. My dealer is pushing 150 Yamaha 4 stroke, but he will put on Etec, 4 stroke merc, opti, or Verado. I am open to suggestions, naturally good gas mileage will help if gas prices rise over $5 in years to come, and quiet running would be nice. However I have had Johnson carb engines the last 20 years and have enjoyed. I am open to any of above that I can purchase at good price and extended warranty.

I really like my etec, but the yammie is bullet proof, and the new merc 150 four stroke may be a good bet. The four strokes are gonna lack a little on bottom end for water sports, hence why I chose the etec. All pretty good motors, so you really can't go wrong! All will be improvements over the old carbed motor!!!

I was a die hard Yamaha guy, UNTIL... I changed up and bought a Verado. I had a 2011 F150 on my last boat and thought that was quiet. The Verado is far and away much quieter. And throttle response??!! You've seen the commercial where the guys are testing a multi engine Verado powered boat? They hit the gas and say "WHOA!!" I did that same thing with only a single 175. Seriously, my girlfriend told me I said exactly what they said in the commercial.

If you can, give one a test or at least find a little ride in a Verado powered boat. For me, it was a real eye opener!

I will give them a good look, I dont understand why Merc came out with 4 stroke when already have this engine. I have read that you have to make sure that a merc dealer can service the Verado as well, why is that?

E-tech all the way, had one, great for tubing, fishing and trolling, easy to winterize can take out of storage and back in again if the weather turns.....E-Tech service second to none!

I am sincerely not trying to stir the pot here, but the Verado's are not economical in terms of fuel usage.

The Mercury ProXS gets better fuel economy than the Verado.

If I can ever afford to upgrade my current setup (2007 Triton 215X with a 250 ProXS), I do plan to seriously consider a Verado, but it will not be because of its fuel efficiency.

Based on everything I have read and heard from numerous different owners/users, most 4 strokes use more fuel than comparably sized two strokes...they just (marginally) have cleaner emissions.

Do 4 strokes have reduced emissions...yes.

Do 4 strokes use less fuel...no.

Regardless, the Verado is an awesome motor, just don't be surprised at the pump.

For what its worth, I consistently average 4.5 mpg on my '07 Triton 215X and 250 ProXS...and I am on a very large lake so I typically cruise in the low to mid 50's.

Several others with similar size boats with Verados have told me they are shocked I get 4.5 mpg, because they only get ~ 3 to 3.5 mpg.

I would be interested to see if this info is wrong if any others with Verados have seen better fuel efficiency.

Default Another vote for the Verado

I'll have a Verado 175 hanging off the back of a new 1860 Angler come spring. Quiet, smooth, responsive, DTS is awesome!! If you test drive a boat with a Verado, you will buy a Verado!! I currently have a Yamaha 4 stroke and it's been a great motor, but it's a dog out of the hole and through the midrange, the Supercharged Verado takes all things I don't like about 4 strokes out of the picture, 2 stroke performance along with all the benefits of a 4 stroke. Your not going to save any money at the pumps with the Verado, but it's comparable to all the other motors out there.

Any of those but the Verado are good choices.
