I understand the new 4 stroke Merc is intended to address the market for a lighter-weight, mechanically less-complex, lower-cost 150.

Heavier, supercharger, DTS, a lot of extra things that can go wrong in my opinion! That is why you need a service tech that knows what he is doing. Personally, the new merc four stroke is a better option if I had to pick between the two. I like the Etec because it has a lot less moving parts and virtually no maintenance. Winterizes itself, I change the lower unit grease myself. One update on the computer at 3 years.......I know the bigger verados require a second battery to run all the extra crap too if you have a kicker tied in. I hope the small ones don't? I know everyone loves them and thinks they are all that, but because of all the extra possiblites of failure, it would be at the bottom of my list.......

Not everyone loves them.

My 150 Verado needed a bigger battery (at least) if not two to run properly. I would say a Verado needs at least one group 31 battery if you are only putting one battery in. Two group 29s would probably be a better choice. Seems silly to me.

I didn't like having to baby my Verado when it was working and I darn sure didn't like it when it was in the shop.

my 150 has one interstate 29 never a problem even with 9.9 kicker. the dual batteries is for the big one with power steering.

best way to choose a motor is try to get in a rig similar to what you are buying and see what you think. i know ALOT of people who fish and we all have different set ups. some have problems some don't.

what i have learned from a forum is that most comments are biased. go on many other sites and talk to as many people as you can to get more information.

Default get the one you really want

THe least expensive choice often is the one you really want. There have been times when I thought I could not afford the one I really wanted, so I bought something less expensive. and I did not feel satisfied the whole time. Finally I went out an bought the one i really wanted. As it turned out, I paid for both, I was able to sell the one, but really ended up spending far more than if I had bought what I wanted.

If you have a great deal of extra money, it would be a fun project to see your boat rigged up with the 560hp cadillac engine with an outdrive.

I wonder if you could get 120 mph on your boat with that motor sitting in the bottom of the boat??

Always curious as to see something new and different.

If I can ever afford to upgrade my current setup (2007 Triton 215X with a 250 ProXS), I do plan to seriously consider a Verado, but it will not be because of its fuel efficiency.

Based on everything I have read and heard from numerous different owners/users, most 4 strokes use more fuel than comparably sized two strokes...they just (marginally) have cleaner emissions.

Do 4 strokes have reduced emissions...yes.

Do 4 strokes use less fuel...no.

Regardless, the Verado is an awesome motor, just don't be surprised at the pump.
I thought the ETECs had cleaner emissions. As far as fuel economy I think you need to look at how you operate the boat. Look at the tests on BWB mag and look fuel use at different rpm's when test on the same boat. Some of the 4 strokes get the better mid range fuel economy but fall off at high rpm's.

I like my Etec 115 but it`s new and they`re all nice when they are new.
Time will tell.
If going Mercury in my opinion the Optimax is the way to go.
Under 90 horse I`d go fourstroke over I`d go EFI two stroke.
Thats just me.

I dont need high end just good engine reliable at speeds at 2025, also at 1000-1500 rpms. I think after reading at many other forums, i am leaning now toward the yamaha 150. If I change my mind, it will then go to an etec.

But for your engine choices, there is little need to go past the Yamaha 150 4 stroke. It is a tough proven engine with a long track of power, quiet, economy, and reliablity.

Be safe and enjoy.
