Anyone know if I have to power my HDS directly from the battery or can I power from a spare in my console power strip? The possible issue is does the HDS need a constant 12v source for memory retention? My console has a master power switch that would kill power to the HDS is wired there.

As a general rule, it's always best to power any graph directly to the starting battery. Make sure you fuse it properly.
You can also add a separate fuse panel just for electronics, which is what I do. The idea here is to isolate the graph(s) from anything in the boat that could produce electrical noise like the pumps, timers, radio, etc. Although most guys probably power their graphs off the boat's existing fuse panel, doing so is not the best way to do it. These larger 12v color screen are very current sensitive and some of the problems that people report (spontaneous shut downs/reboots) could be solved by proper wiring. The Lowrance HDS does not need to be powered to retain memory or settings. Jim Carroll NPAA #13 |

I took the lazy route on my Lund/HDS7 and powered from the main fuse panel. Mainly I wanted to make sure the unit did not pull any power while I was away by using the master power switch. It does retain all memory of settings, no longer how long its been without power.
It shows beautiful sonar returns without interference and does not reboot during main motor starts (but I replace starting battery every 3 yrs). It also has its own inline fuse, so I kept that in place. |
