Humm... You try it on a RAM mount or something else? I must have a 1.5 0r 2" RAM ball with a 6" clamp now. I should snap some pics but I have no idea how to post them. My 998 currently knocks down my starboard bow vision. I guess mine currently is off to the right side of the gauge cluster so I can look forward through the wind shield. If I need to look that way I just look around it to the right side of it. Steering wheel is about 2-3" away from locator. I'm sure with the boat in your sig you have tilt steering so that shouldn't hinder things.

Looking at the dimensions given on Humminbird's website, it would look like the 1198 would be easier to mount since it is thinner than the 998 if windshield depth and steering wheel clearance is an issue. Then again I haven't had one actually up in the boat to see like you. LOL. It's all theory until I screw it up...

1198 13.1" W x 8.8" H x 2.9" D
998 11" W x 6" H x 4" D

Ram mount without any ball? Weird. Didn't think they made any other mounts. You got a Ram part number by any chance?

Do you have any pictures of how you have your 1198 mounted in the console? I am anticipating on doing the same thing with my 1800 Explorer upgrading my 997 to a 1198 too but not sure if that will fit either.

Run the swing mount on mine, I have it on a 185 Tournament Sport and it actually has worked out well, swings partially out of the way to see though the windshield and back for usage.

I tend to look over the windshield most the time anyway.

The proof in the pudding is when you get an actual unit and a mount and try to shoe-horn it in that available area. There really isn't much mounting space on the console and that further hinders efforts to arrange the locator. Dimension wise with a paper cutout doesn't give you the whole story either. You really need to get an actual unit & mount and go from there.
I'll try to take a pic of the 998 in mine tonight.

Here's a couple pics of my dash. Should have the room. Might lose viewing my trim gauge but the Smartcraft comes on for it when ever I hit the trim/tilt.

Mine sits a little higher with the bigger Ram mount. Actually I like it higher. I too had the issue with the 1198 covering the trim gauge...not realizing that the SC gauge would read tilt.
I changed to the 2.25 inch Rams and just used screws to mount. I'm going to make a backing plate a little bigger than the Ram base and bolt and nut it. There is some flex caused by the dash not being real stiff. That should pretty much nulify any vibration. Big improvement with the bigger Ram though.

Jeff-

Is your grey console caps plastic or fiberglass? I don't have a problem with the Ram base flexing at all just getting the clamp tight enough.
