I guess it depends on what you are buying. I've found Cabelas cheaper when outfitting a boat. Here's one example. Significant difference!!
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boati...3Bcat104434380
90 degree 750 gph Regularly $36.99, on sale $32.99

http://www.basspro.com/Mayfair-Cartr...t/37059/506390 90 degree 750 gph $43.99

I guess I haven't noticed that much difference in normal price on the majority of like items at either Bass Pro or Cabela's. I do believe Cabelas has more "up north" fishing items while Bass Pro has more, well... bass stuff.

I really enjoy browsing at Cabelas, and feel the staff is tuned in to my wave length. What I don't understand is how they ever sell anything from their "Bargain Cave". The prices on most items I might be interested in are obscenely close to full retail - WTH. My conclusion is that whoever sets policy really doesn't want to get rid of that merchandise. Occasionally, they will have a bin on the main floor with some real bargains in them.

I did pick up some more lures/items which I really don't need more of at the bargain shelves at Scheels at Coralville this week. They can have some pretty good deals on some baits if one has time to burrow through the bins, I probably spent an hour doing same. Example - Stop Signs - 99 cents.

Going to Bass Pros site ( I have one ten miles from my house) their clearance section contains nothing that has the deep discounts that Cabelas has. Again, this is just based on my own findings and observations.
By next spring, we'll have 2 more Cabela's in Michigan (new stores in Saginaw and Grand Rapids). I visit the Dundee store when I drive by on the way to Ohio AND know they have something either in-stock or on sale that I can't get at Frank's or Jay's. Rarely happens.

Generally, if the big chain sporting goods stores want my business, they need to contact me via email or newspaper fliers with an outstanding bargain.

I have become a fan taclewarehouse.com. Good prices with good service so far. Not sure if they have much for walleye fishing. Yes I am a Bass nut lurking here.

I don't go to bass pro because the one time I did go I signed up to get their catalogs and flyers mailed to me. Now I only get calls about buying time shares from them now! Still don't get any catalogs or flyers! Only telemarketers! Don't get that from cabelas!

Wink Consumer mentality. . .

Internet outlets are a godsend to those of us who live 150 miles (or more) from any decently stocked hook & bullet store.

That being said, I have a strong feeling that Cabela's & Bass Pro retail outlets make most of their money off the same people who overpay for produce trucked to their community, then sold in an awning-covered booth in a parking lot. Personally, if I'm in Cabela's or BP and the item is not on an endcap (I think that's the right term), and marked way down, I'll wait. . .

Maybe I need to take a look at Cabelas again. I stopped looking entirely because the prices were higher than BPS. It's been year now and I've only given my business to BPS. Including BPS branded items that I feel are good quality. They make good reels, tents and other camping gear, rainsuits, the list goes on.

I will say that Cabelas DOES have a better clearance sale section, but in the spring time BPS is hard to beat on some things.

Part of my issue with Cabelas is the horrible store here in Michigan....Actually that's MOST of my problem with them.

Default Cabela's

The closest Cabelas to to me is about 2 hours, so I only get to the store when I am heading to the twin cities. I do however shop online from Cabelas and usually can find some pretty good deals. I also check BPS before I order and most of the time they are more expensive. If I can I shop at our local Gander Mountain and our Mills Fleet Farm has an awesome fishing section!!

Unless it's a BPS or Cabelas branded item, I shop around on the net and usually find my best deal on Ebay. I buy almost all my marine and fishing equipment from Ebay. Quickleen, spark plugs, reels, lures, split rings, hooks, you name it. Some fo the medium size box stores and even some internet stores run Ebay stores also and sell cheaper than they do in their normal operation. I bought an airbrush from TCP Globals Ebay store that was $20 cheaper than their regular website price.

Personally I will not spend a dime at Bass Pros, not because of price or selection simply because I pass three of their stores regularly and can't bring my truck into their parking lot which every Cabelas I pass does. So I feel they don't want my money, I even told the clerk in Vegas once after walking a mile in 115 heat that yes I was going to buy a 1198 bird but not fromthem cause I wasn't good enough for them even though they had a huge lot that was empty I couldnt park so Cabelas whom always has truck parking would get my money.
