REW said it perfectly! Do you really "need" that item. That being said, I really like BP, Cabelas, Gander, Sportsmans warehouse and some others. Fun to browse but keep your impulse buy's in check.

Possibly the best thing to do, is to keep the money in your bank and just go fishing. After all, do you really need that other thing, that other lure, that other hook?

Or, do you really have enough "things" to do the job.

Open your eyes and your heart and do some serious thinking about what you have.

Once you have a single rod, reel and hook - what else do you really HAVE to have, to have a great day on the water catching fish?

I am sure that you do not need 500 crank baits in your box. I am sure that you don't need 20 rods and 30 reels in your box. I am sure that you don't need a thousand jigs.

So, as I posted earlier, it is quite likely that the very best place to spend your fishing and sporting goods dollars - is NoWhere. i.e. just leave the money in the bank, in your pocket, and just enjoy the hobby.

I buy Cabelas sometimes, but have pretty much quit using them. I shop alot at Roger's Sporting Goods www.rogerssportinggoods.com

Bought a 50lb thrust trolling motor for $180 shipped to my door last year from Roger's. Cabelas wanted $240 plus shipping.

I can have a case of waterfowl ammo on my doorstep the day after I order it for $99.99 shipped.

my gripe would be two fold. First they at my local store,so I assume others, don't restock. So popular sized and colors of say jig heads are available in the spring. By June they have what they have left. Secondly they are very, very poor at regional fishing selection. Lake Michigan fishing is ignored. Want a 3/4 oz KO Wobbler the most popular casting spoon by a wide margin around here nada. Lose a lead core set up in tangled mess nada. I personally would pay for the convenience of a well stocked speciality store BPS is not well stocked. National purchase policies don't help prices and crush selection options.

If you find something at another store cheaper - Bass pro will match the price. I just purchased a new tackle box tonight. Bass pro price - $24.99 Farm & Fleet price $19.99 (also happened to be on sale so $15.65)

Bass Pro price matched the $15.65 and still gave me the additional 10% off for the VIP card. (from purchasing my tracker boat)

Not saying it is awesome - but if you already know what you want is cheaper somewhere else, they will match the price if you ask them too. (I did have to bring up the item on the competitors website from my phone)

Just making you aware,

Michael

So BPS will match a competitors lower price...and somehow people think that's a good practice. What that tells me is that BPS, after being confronted with their price gouging tactics, will lower their price for the accuser but continue to gouge everyone else. What a joke! If I have to look at 3 different places for the best price then the place with the best price and service gets the business. I've never spent a red cent with BPS and never will.
I shop Cabela's often enough but only if I can't get what I need at Fleet Farm.

I had to replace my fishing net. (Beware of non-suspicious looking people fishing around the ramp). Cabelas is the closest big outdoor store for me but I didn't care for the selection. A day or so later, Mrs. N and I drove over to BPS where I found more of the type I preferred.

The lowest priced bass style spinnerbaits at BPS were about $3.50; Cabelas had them for about about 1.50. I always stop by the Bargain cave and have seen St. Croix rods for half the usual price. Nothing wrong with them. I didn't need more rods and could not justify buying them just because of the price.

Internet shopping was made for me. I get very irritated when there is some basic everyday type of item I want and the store is out and I have to run around.

You have to be smart about what are your needs and wants. You need to know the pricing structure and sometimes you have to hit the store or website just at the right time.

Wow, the St. Criox rods at 1/2 off would be a good deal. The rods at the Bargain Caves that I have seen usually have something wrong with them, most have several inches of the tip broken off and a new tip top glued on. It is amazing to me that they feel someone would pay up to $100 for such a rod. Perhaps different locations have different philosophies on what they charge for the Bargain Cave merchandise.

Any of your brick and mortar stores is going to be more expensive that online e-trade stores. It's the way of the world now days. Just look at it. Cabelas and BP have a ton of money wrapped up in their stores, initial building cost, taxes, labor, electricity, insurance...... on and on. The only thing they have going for them is the hands on experience, ya know, actually seeing, touching, comparing what you're buying.
Now the savvy buyer will go to BP or Cab's and shop around, compare products, decide what they want then go home and order it from an online retailer. The online ret.'s just have a central warehouse and shipping department with almost none of the overhead so consequently can offer cheaper prices.
A perfect example is Best Buy vs Amazon, or Barnes and Noble vs Amazon. They can't compete for a reason.

BPS is not my first goto choice. However they have some brands and products that I like. They also give me another place to shop to find some hard to find items.
