Default Yamaha F150 propping

Hey all,

I am still looking for the best prop for my yamaha f150 on an 1850 ranger reata. Motor is mounted correctly, as high as it will go.

1. The 21 pitch pro series (14.5 x 21) ran about 5200 rpms. 43 mph
2. Tried a powertech ptz4 in an 18 pitch at a few peoples reccomendations ran to about 5500. 43 mph

The pro series would blow out if you trim too much, but the powertech ptz would trim as high as it could go..

Have a chance to demo these two props before buying..
1. Yamaha Reliance 13 3/4 x 19 pitch
2. Yamaha Performance Series 14 1/4 x 18 pitch.

What would be worth trying? Should I go with a 17 in that 4 blade? If I gain only 200 rpms I am still only at about 5700.. I think that performance series would be worth a shot to gain some rpms and maybe some speed??? Going from a 4 to a 3 should add a mph or two not? Any opinions appreciated!!

Thanks

I am running a Powrtech RAS 17 pitch 3 blade and am running 5800 rpm and 45mph with my stratos 386 with f150. I tried 4 other props and this was the best one and I'm 2nd hole from the top. That is with 2 adults and 2 children. I ran all the props with the same amount of poeple because it is very seldom I am by myself and full tank of gas. The powertech ROTC looked like the Same prop but had different results.

21 Pitch is high for the F150. . . I'd try either the 19P Tempest or 17 or 18P Powertech PTC4.. . That should get your rpms and speed up providing your motor is running right and mounted in the right hole for your boat.

Default same performance

KB, I had the same prop's on my 2008 Ranger Reata 1850 with the F150 Yamaha and I had almost identical results as yours. With the 21 Yamaha prop I was around 5000-5100 rpm and about 43 mph, I replaced it with the PTZ4 18 and now I run around 5600 rpm and 44 mph. I decided I would leave it alone for now but I am interested to see what you can find out with those other props. I would suggest giving a call to propman, he said he could sharpen up the blades on the prop and maybe get me another 1-2 mph. He may have some other suggestions also.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

I am going to give that 14 1/4 x 18 pitch performance series a try I think. Theoretically if I was at about 5500 with a 18 pitch 4 blade, dropping to a 3 blade in that same pitch should give me another 300 rpms hopefully. Getting to 5800 would be plenty good for me... I'll keep you posted, and if you try anything or get any closer, let me know as well!!

I am 99% sure that is the Powertech prop my brother runs and he loves it. good hole shot and he pulls tubers, skiers, boarders etc,
he got it from Propman Rick

I also went to a 4 blade powertech on my 2060 Tuffy tiller with the F150 Yamaha and that to is an excellent set up.

I changed to a ported PowerTech PTC4R18. I do like the performance but I still have rpm issues. It's like this motor is programed to allow me one run at 6000 rpm and then reset itself for 5600 to 5800 rpm.
This is not the first time it has done this. I went from the stock 3-blade 21 Yamaha to a 3-blade 19 Yamaha and then to a PowerTech 3-blade 19 all with the same results.
I have yet to run it with a heavy load with the PTC418 to see how it does. I am at my wits end with this junk. I wish I had returned it in exchange for a 17 pitch but it's too late for that and I am not spending another dime on a prop. The book does state that normal operating range is 55 to 6000 rpm.

Default powertech

The 4 blade PTC18 pitch ran how high of rpms for you? If it is that high, do you need a 17 even? What rpms would a 17 put you at about? What kind of rpms were you getting out of the 21 pitch 3 blade?

Thanks

The cupping & diameter along with pitch will change how the prop performs. My boat is glass about 20ft x 102" beam it came power matched from the factory with a 14.25 x 17 reliance prop but my dealer said it did 6200 rpm so he put 15.25 x19 solas on. During the test ride 2 persons light load 10 gal of fuel we hit 5600 rpm at 52 mph gps. When I load the boat for fishing I get 5300 rpm at 49 mph, I think I would be better off with the prop it came power matched from the factory with. I did test with average load one person 13.3/4 x 19 reliance it did 5600 rpm at 50 mph. Load the boat with six persons full gear, 60 gal fuel & I am getting about 5100 at 46 mph with the solas. It planes fine great on fuel average 5 mpg but think the builder power matched the prop for a good reason & Yamaha states the reliance series props were designed for the F150.
