It just gets tough to find a boat that will do everything you'd like it to do in that 10000 range. I've been hunting around nearly a year. Doesn't help living in flat bottom boat country neither. May have to break down and buy new I guess.

I agree with 4JawChuck,
The boat I was comparing to was the exact same boat, single console same everything but a 2012 or 2011 model. I was also assuming this boat was new and not a used one. I don't think 9500 is a good deal on this one, but to each their own. It isn't that the boat will only go 30mph. Racing has nothing to do with it! It is the fact that to get on plane was 15-20 seconds. If the waves get bad and you are stuck in 2-4 footers I want the power to get the bow up and plow them, I wouldn't have felt safe in that boat. I want instant reaction when I hit the throttle, in bigger waves this is important. WOT is out of the question, but I want to get to 15-20mph as fast as possible, and get the bow up in the air to cut the waves affectively. If you fish in flat calm conditions all the time the horsepower isn't going to matter. Put a trolling motor only on that boat and you will be fine. Last edited by Pezman38; 08-17-2012 at 09:58 AM. |

I have a Crestliner 1600 angler which is close to the 165 classic in layout and performance. Mine has a merc 60hp 4 stroke and I have played with motor height and props to finally get a boat that will do 30+ consistently at WOT. IMO a 50hp is to small a motor for that boat, will get you to high 20's for speed but holeshot and load carrying will suffer. An F70 or an Etec 75 would be idea for that boat. You will never regret having more power. I wish every time I punch it mine had a 75 on the back of it.

Hello Angwalleye: Does the motor have trim and tilt ? Make sure the motor is at the right height and with the right prop because it will make a big difference in performance to get the boat on plane. Good Luck O - R

I have a 2012 Alumacraft Classic 165 with a Yamaha 60 4ST tiller. The motor does a good job. I get up out of the hole quick and can run very smoothly at 4000 rpm's. The motor will turn 6000 rpm's and my speed is 32-34 mph. At 4000 rpm's I am in the mid twenties. If I was buying a wheel boat I would want at least a 70 hp motor.
I think that wou will be unhappy with the 50 hp. Last fall when I bought my boat they were blowing out 2011 Classic 165's with a Yamaha 50 hp 2ST at around $10,900 and that included a trolling motor and graph. |

My friend has this same boat with a 75 E-tec. Plenty of power but I wouldn't want any less hp.

This performance report has the 165 Classic tiller hitting 30.5 MPH at 5,700 RPM with the 50 4 Stroke Yamaha and a 12 pitch prop. Time to 20 MPH is listed at 8.5 seconds. It cruises in the low 20's at 4,500 RPM. My first boat was a 16 foot welded aluminum side console with a Yamaha 50 4 Stroke. It was an upper 20's boat and I never felt unsafe in it and it sure as heck never took 15-20 seconds to get on plane. It also cruised in the low 20's at around 4,500 RPM. My current boat is an Alumacraft 165 Competitor with an Yamaha 70 4 Stroke tiller. It tops out at around 32 with my current prop, it gets on plane really quick and it cruises really nice in the low to mid 20's. My conclusion? Topping out at or around 30 MPH and cruising in the low 20's is just fine for a 16 foot tiller fishing boat designed for 2-3 people. |

I have the 75 and am glad I chose it over the 50 or 60. I usually cruise at 3800 / ~ 25 mph but can go 6000 / 37 if needed. |
