Take your loaded boat and trailer across a scale. Weigh just the trailer with its load on it.

Then, multiply by 7-10% and that whould be your weight on the tongue

i.e. if your loaded trailer weight 4,000 lbs, the tongue should weight between 280 and 400 lbs.

In any event, it is always a good idea to know the loaded weight of YOUR rig, as you load it. Everyone carries different things in their boat when traveling.

Then, take your loaded weight and divide by the number of tires. Take that number and multiply by 1.2 to give you a safety margin.

Then, take that number and compare it to the max loaded weight on each tire. Be sure that your tires are up to the task of carrying your trailer safely.
