Default 60 Etec vs. 4 Stroke

Looking at re-powering a boat that max HP is 60. Its a fiberglass tiller and not known to be quick out of the hole. Would a 60 Etec be quicker out of the hole versus a 4 stroke (i.e. Yamaha EFI) or not a big difference?

The E-TEC has more torque, low end power, than the Yamaha and it swings a larger diameter prop. Also the tiller arm is better designed.

Are crankshaft bearings on a Etec sealed or are the lubed by injection oil?

I've never owned anything but Merc products but I gotta tell you I am really impressed with the E-tec. If I was lookjng at a new motor I'd be seriously tempted to go that route. Much lighter than a 4 stroke, more torque and less maintenance too. Very simple design. My only question would be which one is better for trolling.

Back in 2009, Trailer Boats/BWB did a 8-way 50hp comparison (all the 60's are based on 50's), here is the article, if you can find an original print version, it had a bunch of comparison graphs. http://www.bwbmag.com/output.cfm?id=...&sectionid=315

This is as close to an un-biased comparison as I could find.

FYI, I've got the original article as a pdf. PM me your email address if you want to see it.

I've never seen an engine with a sealed crankshaft bearing inside of it. They are oil injected.

There is no significant weight difference between a 60-horse Etec and 60-horse Mercury 4-stroke.

BRP Etec snowmobile engines are.
They do so to meet EPA standards.

Just curious if the outboards were the same.

Agreed that the E-TEC likely has more low end grunt, but a better tiller handle than the Yamaha? I think it's pretty much universally accepted that the Yamaha tiller handle is the best out there, although the Merc Big Tiller handle is probably on par with it from what I've read.
