HRG, your charts suggest the 2 stroke Etec is no faster than 4 strokes, actually a tad slower than some.... not what I would have thought. The 4 stroke Mercury is faster at 4000 and 5000 rpms. Had wished the Yamaha 4 stroke would be faster - really like the trolling feature of the VTS in a tiller boat that size.

Here's a screen shot of the "holeshot" chart.

The on going evolution of the of the fourstroke outboard pretty much erases the difference from the two stroke.
The latest new redesigned fourstrokes are just a bit heavier than the two strokes.
The stock Etec tiller handle is better thatn most but can be trumped by the optional handles on some of the other motors.
I just bought a new boat with the 115 Etec and I really like it so far.
Having to change oil is pretty the only difference between the two.
The nicest running motors I`ve seen in the tillers are (in my opinon) Hondas.

That old B&WB magazine article about 50hp outboards does not apply to the 60hp E-TEC.

The 60 E-TEC has completely different exhaust internals inside the midsection compared to the less powerful 50hp version, plus a computer-controlled system that varies the tuning of the exhaust during acceleration for better performance.

From what I can remember of that 50hp shoot out article it seemed that the motors all were pretty much the same and the variations in propping were what made the difference. Motors with better hole shot generally ran slower top end and vice versa, as you'd expect.

I have a 60hp ETEC, I can say most guest that I take on my boat are impressed with the low end accelertation and top end. Especially the guys that have older 2 strokes. The Suzuki seem to be realy quiet, but not to sure about trolling mode.

The problem I have with the article is my real world experience says that there is some sort of bias going on there. Has to be.
I've driven literally hundreds of boats with all of the above, (granted usually 90% of those are pontoons) and the e-tec, and 2 stroke merc out accelerates the 4 stroke mercs by a HUGE margin top speed is usually a bit better as well. Same goes when comparing the the Honda.

Again, I looked at and read the article posted, but in my experience (which is quite a bit) I'm saying that article is BS.

Default Test ride?

Anyone in the Twin Cities have a 60 hp Etec tiller that would be willing to offer a test ride?
