Default HDS 5 will not Talk to HDS 7

I have recently mounted a hds 5 in the back of my boat and was hoping to connect it to my hds 7 which is at the console and the transducer is mounted in back of the boat....

I am going out fishing tomorrow and decided to hook up both units in the driveway to see if I could get them set before getting on the water. I was trying to get them set but looks like I will have to be on the water, as I just spent an hour trying to get the 5 to read off the 7.

I tried alot of things but maybe I am missing something which I am sure I have to be! I went to Network and selected it to "read" both units but when I go to my 5 and try to select my 7's sonar I can not find anything from my HDS7

I can go to my 7 and hook in into my 5 no problem but I only have a power cable and ethernet cable going to the 5 as I was hoping to hook the 5 in with the 7 so it could read the sonar instead of mounting another transducer in the back from the 5 to run off.

I guess my question is what am I doing wrong, or can someone explain how to do it. I searched all over the net looking for info on the ethernet cable and can not find it.

Default Network Sonar

On the 7, press menu twice and select Sonar. Then highlight Network Sonar and press Enter.
Now turn on the 5 and it should auto select the transducer on the 7.

If you have Network Sonar selected on the 5, go in and turn it off. It doesn't have any sonar to network.

Maybe that was/is my issue I had both selected. I was going to try after dinner but it was starting to rain and I said enough of this covered the boat up.

I will give that try in the morning.

Are you just using an Ethernet cable to connect the two? Or are they going through a structure scan unit?

This shouldn't be so complicated. If they are connected with an ethernet cable and you select 'Network Sonar' on the 7, it should show up on the 5. I don't think it matters whether Network Sonar is selected on the 5 or not.

Looks like you have a bad ethernet cable or a bad connection. Unplug, check that the pins are not bent, swap ends and replug and tighten. Guess you could use an ohmeter and check end to end on the cable for continuity.

Yea, I thought i was doing it correct but maybe not

My ethernet cable was working 2 months ago just fine and since then my old hds 5 I had to send in and they sent me a referbished one and I am thinking maybe the ethernet port is bad?

If that is the case this is my 2nd issue with a lowrance unit in 2 months and may just have to switch to birds....I have buddies running birds and they have no problems at all

It is possible that it is a bad ethernet port bud. Have you made sure that both of your units are up to the most current update? Sometimes they won't read each other if they aren't. If they are, is there an HDS that one of your buddies has that you might be able to borrow to verify if its your 5 or your 7?

I am going to run updates on them tonight hopefully!

I am thinking its a bad port from my 5 because for some reason not sure why....BUT when i hook them up my 7 can pick up my 5 but with no sonar going to my 5 that does me no good.

If its a bad port on the 5 Lowrance will hear an ear ful since this is was suppose to be a "replacement" for our old 5 that quit working on us....Seems like I have had nothing but issues with my lowrances
